Well, about a ship with beams: once I used a Leviathan, the only change was BFRed BGreen instead. It acted quite good and was deadly, even though it was a single one !
Personally, I have an idea of an assault corvette, with twin beam at the front, and several flak turrets on top, a ship of high speed, say 60 m/s., size about Deimos, maube a bit smaller. What do you think about it?
Reasonable?

That sounds like a good idea...I'd say use Moloch's chassis.

The only problem is that in order to have such a top speed it would have to be lightly armoured.
But that's the big problem generally with ship design; balancing the trade-off with speed, armament and protection (armour). If you don't balance it, and have a ship that can rip a destroyer in half moving at the speed of light while being hit by numerous warheads, it just isn't realistic.
Otherwise, I can't see why it wouldn't work! I like the idea of a strike ship that can move in really quickly, deal out some damage, and get the hell out before the bad guys decide to remove it from the scene. It has its advantages over a ‘heavy’ ship that barely moves and fights it out with a drawn out beam dual.

Yeah, thats the kind of thinking I like to hear. There's way too many people who think its perfectly realistic to put a bunch of BFReds on a Fenris and think its fine.
But I do like the idea of a powerful strike cruiser and I think we've got some.

I once made the mistake of downloading a mission where three Colossus Juggernaughts armed only with beams engaged a shivan fleet. I was impressed...
...by the fact my PC didn't crash. It was appaling, completly unplayable, mainly due to being unrealistic. 'Realism' plays a huge part in FS for me, and I think some people have to relise there's nearly always a downside to a good thing (IE a limited number of counter measures).
Where's the interest in being the best all the time? One of the reasons FS is interesting because you're nearly always fighting a foe who is stronger than you, both in numbers and technology.

1) BFReds on a Fenris? That's crazy, and not just because BFReds are Shivan!
2) Here are my ideas for a Fenris strike cruiser...
Leave the front beam as a BFGreen, equip the Fusion Mortar turret(if it can be changed) with whatever, replace the anti-fighter beams with SGreens, and the flak turrets with LTerSlash. This would probably work better on a Leviathan becuase its' chassis is much better armored than that of a Fenris. That, or make a "Fenris Mk II." with armor and speed right in between those of the Fenris and Leviathan.
