Just to add my 2p's worth, I would prefer a bit of all the styles where approatate.

There must be a mission where player must rescue Alpha 1 because the GTA won't stand a chance without him

Alpha 1 is invincible!
Anyway, you'd have to assign a character to Alpha One... which would totally mess up the universal-ness (?) of Alpha One.
There could, however, be a part where the player is facing impossible numbers of enemies, but then Alpha Wing soars in from overhead and blasts loads of baddies into oblivion.

I like them all actually..system shock 2 probably my very favorite. I get bored with frag fests like Quake most quickly, although I did play the voyager one for quite awhile.
Deus Ex I loved as well, that's more of a 'puzzle' type.
I'm against team-based, since, while it's loads of fun with other humans, to the ping-limited people, like me (hey, what'd ya expect when I live in Israel?), it would be a total pain in the @$$, and don't tell me that the single-player was what was good in Rainbow 6 or Ghost recon.
Or, how about this: You wake up in an unfamiliar, abandoned ship, with military-grade implants and no memory from the last few weeks, and suddenly, you get a message, telling you that the deck you are in is about to depressurize... erm, wait, I think I've seen that one somewhere.
Well, seriously, I say that I'd like teamplay, but that's definitely NOT essential for a good SinglePlayer game. Atmosphere and good level design are. A good story, good weapons and an occasional puzzle can raise the game from good to great. And don't forget sound FX. They are important for the atmosphere (SShock 2 did that perfectly), and can make weapons alot more enjoyable (Who cared the MP5 in half-life didn't have a realistic sound? The effect really made you reluctant about pulling your finger from the trigger (Or mouse, really) reluctantly, and that IS part of the fun, so stick lots of bass, reverb and a loud "casing hits the ground" sound
).
And Fragfests, while they are fun, get really old in singleplayer, and even in multiplayer, they have little longevity.

I like a quest.
Red Faction is a quest.
FreeSpace a quest.
First person quest.
No they aren't.
Quests are games like Grim Fandango, Monkey Island, etc.
Games like Outcast are referenced as Adventure games.
Red Faction is a good action game, but nothing more, and FreeSpace 2 definately isn't a quest

I think you need a good balance. It needs to feel imersive, it should make use of squads, now and then, and it should be filled with some frantic firefights interspersed amongst stealthy momments. Its all about finding a good balance.

I definetly think that there should be some System Shock 2 moments:
You are a marine on a GTSC Faustus in the Ross 128 system when it suddenly takes an impact from an unknown source (Shivans). You must stealth through the ship to the comms system to transmit an S.O.S., go to the databanks to collect information about this 'impact'. While trying to avoid Shivans that can burst through floors and doors.
Finally, you must leave in an escape pod while Beta, Gamma and Delta wings are eaten alive by Shivan fighters. After, you are transferred to another ship to fight the Vasudans as normal, to keep to the spirit of FS:FPS.
Team-based missions should still form the core of the mod, though (in my opinion), as hunting down Vasudans with a pack of your fellow Space Marines would be cool - "Flush him/her/it out!" and "Take tha.......AAAARGH!"

Balance will definitely be the key to a good FS:FPS.
Different missions that follow the different rulesets.
Frag Fests like Quake and AvP.
Atmospheric like System Shock2.
Team work is good on occasion, see various missions in Medal of Honour: Allied Assualt, Ghost Recon and C&C: Renegade.
Other players are handy to have around when the firefight starts.
Also Teams are good for mission objectives
ie a mission in Project IGI where you are assigned as sniper to an assualt team and play God, taking out the bad guys.
And after just finishing playing Dues Ex (again), I must admit to being partial
to a game where there is no one correct way to completing it.
Plus a great story/plot line.
Another balance to watch, will be the 'one shot and your dead' vs the 'virtually indestructable' style.
ie Rainbow 6, Rogue Spear and Operation Flashpoint system versus Quake type engine games.
Also will this FPS support the use of vehicles and the like (alla Renegade)?
Good luck to the development team and I'll watch this space with interest.

they have a grenade/det pack type weapon in RF2. its like a satchel charge in RF but u dont get a remote to push the button and choose when it goes off.
you just choose the "grenade," press R2 and you throw it on the wall. then it goes off somewhere around 3-5 seconds later.
thats jus an idea, if u cant have a rocket launcher. it wouldnt make much sense if the humans had rocket launchers on oard anyways.

lets think about this...ship is in deep space. No air in space. explosives on outer bulkhead. explosives blow holes in walls/bulkheads. Suddenly no air in ship either. Congrats, your all DEAD now. Geez, what kind of imbeciles would want to be able to kill themselves like that...
personally i think squad based combat would be much better than jumping **** or solo stuff. Do modern armies have Solo missions? Hell no. Squad based combat is everything now. Havent you played any recent games like ArmyOps or SOCOM: US navy seals? get that into Geo-Mod and you have a winning game...although i think that fighting shivans would be much more fun that fighting weak-ass vasudans
Watch what you say arround here, Vasudans have an awful lot more body strength than puny Terrans.
Fighting Shivans? You saw what a single one of them did... Fighting a Shivan, you might possibly survive if you manage to nuke the entire planet and escape. But fighting Shivans, well I don't want to hear any whining that it's impossible if that's what you want

And you should get real. I seriously doubt this mod will actually see the light of the day, as Red Faction is getting older by the minute, and doesn't have a Mod-Making community half as strong as FreeSpace's one to back it up (Mainly since creating new levels for a 3d action game is a lot harder than doing the same for FreeSpace 2 with FRED2), and I doubt the team is actually working on the mod.
The idea still is novel, though
