Are you going to change that targetting reticle?
It doesn't fit together too well with those energy bars... If ewerything else has to be a box then it should be too...

The hud config isnt the most important thing in the god damn game, just keep the fs2 orginal config, who cares if it aint B5.
at least that my opinion.

Actually, I disagree about the reticle. I used to work on fighter jets and the reticle was round while the rest of the info in the HUD was in a square format.
I think sighting reticles in aircraft are traditionally round (maybe not tradition, but there must be a reason), it would make sense that they would still be round in a Starfury.

I'M TALKING ON THIS ONLY ONCE
sKULLAR MADE THOSE CHANGER AT MY REQUEST. FROM THE BEGINIG IT WAS NOT NECESARY TO BE IN THE MOD. JUST AS A SPECIAL "FEELING" BONUS.iF U DON'T LIKE IT DON'T INSTALL IT.

I love that last picture, excellent.
I also agree with Seether, stick to your ideals it will make the mod all the better,
Also in the interest of "Total" conversion, is there any way of changing that little box which shows your targetted ship in it, it's still too reminiscent of FS2?

Hey I'm not against this! I would love to have new hud!
And I was not talking about that circle (sp?) in the middle. I was talking about those damn lines next to those energy bars, surounding the reticle in the middle.
If you look at the original hud, you see that the energy bars fit quite nicely with them.
If those whatewer would be changed to match those new energy bars (square and circle don't fit together) I would feel happy. And would have one thing less to complain about...

Skuller: Relax... what you have done so far is indeed much better than the original FS2 HUD and gives us a more B5 feel, specially in the eyes of REAL B5 fans....
I like the energy bars, I like the radar and the reticle:
I just have two tiny suggestions, SINCE you said you liked fooling around with this stuff...
1) Just TRY the radar with 6 sides and post a screenie and see how it looks (top and bottom sides horrizontal, rest at angles, like on TV)
2) the speed guage looks good, but you can see its not nicely curved... anything you can do about that? if not, its still better than the original FS2 one.

The arcs could use a better curve... it looks too... err... how do I put this... Un-anti-aliased? lol

Bman dont like gettin smacked, that hurts god dammit. (smilies arent workin).
hehe, maybe i was kinda of an ass by sayin that, you right it is important.
leave the reticle round, dont think it would look good square. radar should have 6 sides, looks better. guages kool so far.
P.S. however i would be find with just a regular fs2 interface, at least i would *moons seether* (god damn smilies, aaahhhh)

HUDs look great, good work.
I was thinking though. Wouldn't it be logical to make the HUDs as close to B5 as possible?
The interface is one of the most important parts of a game IMO. It's the one constant that you'll see all the time whilst you're playing. It's definitely one of the most important things for setting the atmosphere of a game (how would System Shock 2 have felt if they'd kept the Thief Interface?), and I think it's just as important as modeling new ships. Essentially it's the inside of the new ships that you're modelling. From what I've seen of Babylon 5 (A lot more than I let on) the FS2 interface really doesn't suit the style of the programme.
I think it would be better if you made the interface as close to B5 as possible. I can't believe that in the 5 (or was it 6) years of Babylon 5, you didn't get a look at the controls of a Starfury, and if not then you can still redseisgn the FS2 interace in the design style of the B5 computers (you must've seen computer screens on B5s bridge during the programme).
As for the HUD taking up too much of the screen, bear in mind that FS2 is one of the few games that lets you customize your HUDs colour and *transparency*. I'm sure Skullar is taking snapshots with the HUD at a high opacity so you can see the work he's done clearly. When you actually play the game and tune the opacity down, the HUD'll be a lot less intrusive.
I have no idea what the controls of a Starfury look like, but I think Skullars HUD looks a lot more like B5 than FS2s. Personally I think you should change the speed and warning bars (I can't remember if thats what they're called) to 2 vertical bars, like in fighter jets of today. It might also look better in a medium blue and light green colour scheme... I'm not sure if thats how the B5 computers look, but thats how I remember them.
This is just a quick edit, but generally I mean something like this.

It's not great, but it hopefully shows what I mean.
Good work by Skullar none the less and I look forward to seeing the final thing.
LCF
I think we're getting pretty close now. Maybe not quite as plain as IH8's idea, but that's what I meant by squaring the others off. I do also think that a hexagonal radar may be better... and I think the radar range area looks a bit too big.

Gentlemen , the art lesson is open. All HUD-displays in FS2 are ani-files in the \data\hud folder . These anis consist of a few PCX files WITH A SPECIAL PALETTE !!!!
Here : Download
- ANIVIEWER to view the anis and extract the frames. You will see what is about them when you take a look at them.
- ANIBUILD to make an ani-file out of several PCX files.
http://freespace.volitionwatch.com/fs2files.php
- DLL files if necessary
Here is the HUD I made so far :
http://freespace.volitionwatch.com/babylon/Skullar-hud.rar
Then : Here is the complete 1024er HUD for Freespace 2 . Original.
http://freespace.volitionwatch.com/babylon/1024-hud.rar
Notes :
- First take a look at the palette of the PCX files in the anis. They all have the same palette. When you make HUD the last thing you do when having created own displays is to apply THIS palette to your pics.
- when you make own displays , remember : you can modify the SIZE of the pcx pics , but all pcx files that are supposed to be in one ani have to have the same size. Remember that the position of the UPPER LEFT CORNER of every display grafic is HARDCODED. So , if you make a bigger targeting recticle it wouldn't be any longer in the center of the screen. understood ?
- When you have edited the pcx frames ( each frame has an own meaning , you will see ... ) apply palette and use ani-builder to make an ani file. It must have THE RIGHT NAME and it must be in the \data\hud folder of FS2.
Any questions ? Have fun experimenting....

oh, one last word.
You said the ARCS with the speed and on the other side with the "incoming fire" indicators are curved and disagree with boxlike rest of displays.
Well , note that for example this NASTY little red triangle that gives you the direction where the enemy is MOVES ON A CIRCLE around the center of the screen. So , if you make big boxes there they might interfere with this "approach vector indicator".
But for now I leave it to you to find a better solution for this.
I'll now get back to the more ADVANCED aspects of modding...
And without PSP7 or another paint program just forget it.

Hmm... If I remember correctly, there are two indicators that show you the direction of a target; The red triangle that goes around the circle, and the range indicator that goes around the edge of the screen. Would it be possible to hide the triangle. It seems that it's kinda redundant, especially as the range indicator not only shows the direction, but also the range. If we hid the triangle, then you could make the arcs any shape within the limits of the ANIs and not have the HUD disrupted by crossovers. Plus we wouldn't loose out too much cos we'd still have the range/direction indicator available.
Would that work?

Also, it seems my crappy HUD doesn't load unless you've visited the picture directly, so if you're *really* interested, the link is:

I doubt you're interested, but it just helps to show what I meant in my other post.
