hmm... looks like I misunderstood your english. I thought you asked who owns Volition, not who owns the rights. sorry 'bout that, but I have a little trouble understanding you.

Great news. This is a step in the right direction to be sure. But without a publisher to finance the game, FS3 seems unlikely. I doubt THQ would finance the game, cause from what I've seem they're more interested in profit (Britney Spears game etc) than quality, and besides they're doing mostly console.

However, the fact that V now owns the rights to FS3 is very re-assuring. If THQ decides to start making some smart decisions, or if another publisher finaces it, we're in business

Oh and, Styxx, why did you tell them (V I assume) not to respond to these types of emails. Seems like this is exactly the kind of communication that needs to be going on...

This is NO fact right now... wait until someone official says something on this subject.

Does Volition, Interplay, or THQ even know about the Source Code Project?

I wanted a confirmation from Interplay, here it is. But we still don“t know who has gotten the rights...

---
Dear Gamer,

Yes we no longer have the rights. We only published the game, we didn't develop it. That was Volition.
I do not know who owns the right. You should contact Volition.

Sincerely,

I suspect we are being palmed off with an excuse by someone who doesn't know any better.

unfortunately emails like this are heresay and therefore unable to be proven true. although i'd like a future insallment of FS, im gonna wait for a official word on this subject matter.

Posted by Remora on 09-27-2003 01:33 PM:

I'm skeptical that Interplay sold the rights and nobody heard about it ... AND we're just now learning from a CSR (!!) that Interplay no longer has it. But then again, maybe they sold it and the buying party didn't want everyone to know about it.

I wouldn't assume that just because Interplay doesn't have FS rights, that Volition/THQ has the rights now. The FS rights are like intellectual property, and V/THQ don't really have a claim to it (other than they made the first two, and many of older V developers have said they would do a third without having to think very hard). I'm sure Interplay made the offer to THQ, but I doubt they would invest in something that didn't perform very well sales-wise (compared to some of their other properties). Maybe Volition could have some say in this process, but remember they're not an independant studio. I claim no knowledge of how things work between THQ/V other than V is a dev house of THQ.

But who knows (that's the question) ... finding out is going to be like pulling teeth. IF the rights are sold ... we (the public) didn't hear about it so we can assume was an under-the-table type deal ... aka secret. There's probably a reason for that.

On the other hand, IF someone was working on FS3, nobody is going to tell you until it's formally announced ... unless you're under NDA

Thanks for your words Remora. Maybe I should inform some pc-games magazines and they could try to put some light on it. They could have more success in finding out where the rights went to.

Posted by silver dracon on 09-27-2003 02:37 PM:

i say not do that because it could spoil suprise if THQ plan something like that

(Phreak!?! Remember me? It's Starks.)

Honestly, people should start pimping the FS2 Open to PC gaming mags.

Posted by BabProj Team on 09-28-2003 09:30 PM:

Its possible that the rights hang in legal limbo. Its possible that the contract developed included a time limited lease on the rights of FreeSpace and that after that time it would fall back to perhaps Volition. However, since Volition is now owned by THQ, a rival development house, its hard to say what potentially would become of it.

Needless to say, aside from a brief and cryptic comment from EricB, there hasn't been much interaction between Volition and anyone else since before the Iraq war started. Infact thats around the last time I saw Dave Baranec post on the HLP forums with reference to the FS Open project. Its also important to note that DaveB was more than likely one of the chief proponents to getting the FS2 code released in an open format and made available like it is now. At that point, Interplay was still very much involved with the FreeSpace license. So its either changed since then, or this PR guy doesn't have a clue to whats going on. A possibility in a large corporate structure like Interplay.
