-- Fighters and Capital Ships (https://volitionwatch.game-warden.com/vwbb/showthread.php?threadid=7821)
Depending on what information source you use Whitestars can have 2 or 4 Nials but often don't seem to have any (presumably being loaded with Lintira transports instead. Mr. Fury - that huge quote seems to back up what I say in many respects (i.e. that fighters can cause a deal of damage if they get free but the trick is creating a situation where the fighters can make a proper attack run on their target.
I also see B5 fighters as being fairly analagous to modern day fighters - they are best at protecting a capital ship/base or intercepting enemy fighters. They can however be armed with anti-fortification weapons such as bombs or missiles.
Finally a key point: why would a capital ship have to worry about incoming enemy fighters (without missiles) if they weren't still a threat? The answer is that they must still be a threat if left unguarded so fairly obviously they can do major subsystem damage or if sufficient in number even take out an entire large target.
OK, given that fighters can take out enemy capital ships, what sorts of numbers would you need to be able to do so? I personally think that in general 12-24 fighters of an equivalent tech level could take out a capital ship. Also, if a capital ship has a good fighter escort, then regardless of how outnumbered they are, the defensive fighters could delay the attackers for long enough to make good an escape.

Phyrric argument
It varies from ship to ship, species to species, crew to crew. You can't really specify reliable numbers for the same reason you can't say a Hyperion would always come out the victor against an Olympus.
If you mob an Omega with enough 'furies, eventually you'll take it out.

Since we're talking about fighters (and cap-ships) here. Could you guys make the fighters faster? (just a suggestion). Starfury's in the series could fly past a nova in just 2 seconds (at combat speed, not full). I tried that too but it took a while longer even on full burn.
I thought I'd give you guys some feedback...
keep up the good work, I can't wait for release 2

Fighters have the important advantage of being able to see fire coming thier way and get the heck outta the way. A cap ship has to sit there and take it.
Turrets can only engage one target at once, another fighter can swat a turret while the gunner is distracted. Additionally, fighters can put fire on a target from many additional angles, making it impossible for a ships interceptors to be 100% effective. One bee sting may hurt, but a thousand can kill you.

To the Whitestars:
Why should a ship use fighters, if its nearly as fast or even faster?
Its very unlikly that an enemy can target and shoot down a subsystem of a whitestar crusing with full speed. The whitestar can even dodge enemy fire (like a fighter).
And about the speed:
A little bit more speed can't hurt, but don't make it too fast. It would take away maneuverbility and make it very hard/impossible to controll.
Have you ever played "X-Tension" with a full tuned Boron M5 fighter
.
P.S. M5 is the smallest figther class in "X".

Cool Slasher, sorry if anybody else asked it before me.
About the whitestars, well, you'll never know, a(lot of) couple shots could do the trick. you know, damaging a subsystem.
(I'll go
when R2 comes)

With the Whitestars and fighters, you don't need to damage subsystems as one or two proper volleys ought to take out the Whitestar. The whole point is that the Whitestars didn't get any fighter cover when their mission was solely to take out the enemy capital ships.

yes. I beleive the Whaitestar can carry up to four Nial fighters. In one episode you see evidence of this. I forget the name. Ep. takes place mainly on that Whitestar and you see new recruits (inclusinf Lennier) being trained to use the Nial.

For all the rest of you.... don't come here.
The fighters that were in the whitestar are for ranger use. When the rangers went out for training in how to use a fighter, they weren't taken to the asteriod field in a sharlin but in a ws. And if ws hold 4 fighters imagine a fleet consisting only of ws lauching all their fighters, and they would only need to carry 4 pilots each.

Actually I don't believe the whole fighters in a WhiteStar stuff.
Only in ONE episode we saw fighters launching from a WhiteStar. For this episode WhiteStar's size was increased by 200 meters.
WhiteStar is about 270 meters long, houses already one transport. There is not necessarily room for four fighters.
Conclusion: It is possible that there are few larger WhiteStars for Ranger training purposes which are also capable of carrying a number of fighters. Another possibility is that all WhiteStars are equipped with a shrinker and all Nials are in pocket size in the hangar waiting for launch. Third possibility is that WhiteStars itself are capable of shrinking and swelling.
(No, I wasn't serious)
Because WhiteStars is the fastest known vessel and it's maneuverability as on par with fighters, increased mass would bring these traits down significantly.
