Has anyone disscussed the possibility of just saying that you managed to eject before you hit the ship? I mean, although it was never canon, or an option, You can assume there'd be an eject. how else did Mackie keep comming back (I'm preatty sure I killed him a few times)

Mass of your fighter = 5 tons
Mass of capital ship = 900 thousand tons

See the problem?
I'm making those numbers up, but you see the issue: Ramming a capital ship in a fighter should make a somewhat large dent.
And that's it.

You ever played Tenderizer in fs1? Tell that to the Vasudans that almost destroy the Galatea by crashing into it. You think you've won, they're under control, then the Mauler jumps in......

If you want to fly inside a ship/station and destroy it (plainly ripped from Return of the Jedi), then play Cardinal Spear - Vega for FS1, TamaNeko.
Also, the Vasudans in Tenderiser pack their ships with warheads when they attack the Galatea, so that does the damage, instead of pure kinetic energy, Alphakiller.

Um, yeah, I knew that. Those were suicide bombs. The original post implied staying alive (e.g. only "losing a few guns") while still ramming a capital ship.

So unless you pack it full of explosives, your little fighter is going to be a dent and a messy streak on the armor plate of a real capital ship. But we both agree on that.

Yeah in CS:V I did plainly rip if from StarWars. (actually it's closer to the battle in TPM than the one in ROTJ)

However it's so much funner when taking out a Vasudan installation and not having corny evil galactic emporer dialogue(tm).

Two points: Firstly, the game I was talking about "losing a few guns" in had much more complex damage, where guns and missiles were individual subsystems that could be shot off, as well as other subsystems (comm, repair sys, etc.)

Secondly, mass is only part of the equation. Velocity is very important. Ramming is about kinetic energy. Double the ass, you double the energy but with a fighter you could reach high velocities and quadruple the energy - you could probably carve a GTF Erinyes sized and shaped hole through a ship if you were fast enough.

Oh, and don't forget you've got a contained sun in the fusion reactor. One breach and things get real messy real quick.

Heh, this would make for an interesting MOD. If people could get respawns working in single player, you could have a mission where the player rams one fighter after another into a capship. When the first one is destroyed, s/he respawns in another wing, and so on. Throw in some serious anti-fighter defeneses that you have to dodge and you might actually consider it gameplay.

Oh, and don't forget you've got a contained sun in the fusion reactor. One breach and things get real messy real quick.

But again, you can't severely damage a capital ship by ramming it without killing yourself. If you dug your wings into the side of a capital ship at high velocities, drag on one side of your ship will suddenly go from 0m/(s^2) to thousands of m/(s^2) in a fraction of a second, all the while the other side stays at 0m/(s^2). Consequently, your fighter would spin out of control and the front would arc into the hull of the capital ship, creating a brief, bright, but hardly significant explosion.

The fact that subsystems like guns can be destroyed individualy has nothing to do with the equation, and speed will only get you so far unless you're planning on hitting it at lightspeed. More effective would just be to rig a big bomb to a fighter and deploy the bomb at a close range.

Who says Wing Commander had perfect physics? Not I, to be sure.

I think you might be overcomplicating the matter with realism. Then again, realism does contribute to a good game.

I like the depth of thought that's gone into this.
