It's not THAT bad... but I agree it's wrong for background music. In fact, most classical music is wrong for a continuous mission-background music. It just wasn't written to be looped for hours on end.

However, something memorable and atmospheric (like the Adagio mentioned earlier) would indeed be great for a specific cinematic event. Likewise, there's lots of music that can be set to a cutscene.

Carl Orff's "O Fortuna" (aka "The Excalibur Theme") could probably be adapted to FS2 in-game music very well. It's a long piece, with sections that would lend themselves well to both action and ambience.

I liked the FS2 music...
Anyway, who is going to do the music? You can't just steal music from anywhere. Well, actually, you could... but I think it is unneccessary. Unless it REALLY fits in with the plot (if someone who you know in the game -- like Snipes -- dies, you'll want weepy or "NOOOO! Duh-duhduhduh-duuuuuuuh!" music)

EDIT: Ave Formosissima (that doomsday-ish piece) would be good if a juggernaut was bearing down on your home destroyer.

OH! OH! The William Tell Overture!!!!

Actually, yeah, the FS2 music is good. My favorite is the ending sequence; that music was awesome. It went so perfectly with the images.
