Definitely. That is certainly because of the physics. You "expect" a certain resistance from a real plane or helicopter, so you move the stick in accordance.
Which is not always true in the cases of freespace like games.

I think it`s much much easier to play the FS 2 with the joystick. With the keybord or a mouse it is playable though I hated it since I was almoust unable to aim properly anything smaller than an Orion.
I use a Saitek, a very old, not advanced ( two buttons only ) Chinese joystick, but I bought it only for playing the FS2 and find it quite good. I use the keyboard anyway for all commands and other things and it is quite a good solution.

The great thing about joysticks (mine at least, Logitech Force Feedback Pro) is the ability to use three axis at once, a throttle and enough buttons to use the main controls. The keyboard can handle the more advanced stuff.

Plus: I love force feedback in FS2! Makes it so much more fun! (A little annoying when trying to get a lock with a bomb under flak fire, but you can't have everything)

(And yes, I admit it, I used to use the keyboard when I played FS1, before I got the joystick. I just can't use the mouse)

I find joysticks better. They're analogue and they feel more natural to be.
Mice are quite good, too, but I find it hard to continuously turn in one direction. And there is less chance of a joystick slipping.

Try playing with the joystick in your lap or between your legs. Hold the base with one hand if you have to. And don't push the joystick all the way if you don't have to. If you're making precise turns in a chace, you want to tilt the stick very slightly so that you turn more slowly and for less distance.
Play around with the sensitivity, too.

EDIT: If you're got fast hands, use the joystick for moving around and quickly switch to the mouse for aiming. I do that with my keyboard sometimes. I have never tried with a joystick... because my joystic broke... sob...

Actualy the spacecrafts like these used in the Freespace 2 should be guided with a joystick or something like that - as you have in the planes. It`s much more useful and gives also much more fun than using just keyboard.
I use the Keyboard just like the instrument panel for anything except guiding the spacecraft.

I rather suck at the game anyway, but a joystick is best for Space Games like FreeSpace 2, it is like playing Street Fighter With a Joystick, it is kinda stupid.

When i first got a P133, i played Tie Fighter (DOS CD) with a mouse and with no sound, i was pretty good at it with a mouse, but with a Joystick, it gets some getting used to.

Now, with:

ASUS A7M266
AMD Athlon 1.2Ghz
256MB DDR PC2100
V7100PRO GeForce 2 MX-400 32MB
MS Sidewinder Precision Pro 2 (Something like that)

I can only play it @ 640x480x32 + Settings @ MAX

Probably the Motherboard slowing it down.

When i get my new stuff:

ASUS A7V333
AMD Athlon XP 1600+
512MB DDR 2100
V8440 GeForce 4 Ti4400 128MB DDR
MS Sidewinder Precision Pro 2 (Something like that)

If that can't run FreeSpace 2 and Soldiers of Fortune 2 smoothly, then i will be VERY miffed. lol

Hmm, I completed TIE Fighter with a mouse, but only because at that time there was no other alternative. Played FreeSpace with one of those joy pad things, and that was pretty good. But now I find that the joystick rules over everything and wouldn't ever go back to anything else.

Tought luck F S W...

I succest that you get Saitek ST-110 not best, but it wont break easily.

Played X-Wing series, FS1 (2 times) and FS2 (6 times now...) and it is still fully functional
