Ehh... I'm not making Star Wreck, I said "it takes them", not "it takes us". Samuli just said it in the SW forums

I render my animations in lightwave, a 20 sec anim takes about 7 hours to render. You realy notice a diference when you put motionblur or raytrace functions on. A frame whit out raytrace and motionblur can take about 5 secs per frame and whit them almost 30 secs. I like to render animations at 24fps.

proberly because it also needs to calculate where to put the maps when rendering the frame. but i am not sure of that as i never used the shadow map option in LW.

I always use shadowmaps... makes the shadows look better =)

not sure about the speed of the render...

In almost all cases, shadow maps will be faster to render than raytracing.A few things depend on this, like having a HUGE shadow map size(i.e over 2048)and the complexity of the models that you're rendering can narrow the gap a bit,but shadow maps will be faster 99% of the time, and as someone else said, look better(as long as the shadow map size is big enough so you can't see the pixels in the map) because the can be softened.

And 'hi' since I'm a newbie, but if anyone has a LW problem, then feel free to ask since I've been using it for about 7 years 'professionaly',or so I'd like to think, but I'm sure that my work collegues might disagree

I am rendering a 20 sec animation at the moment, it contains earth, a starfield and 2 GOD defenceplatforms. The setup took me 6 hours. To place the missiles and all the other stuff that comes whit it. and now i am rendering it it should be done in like 5/7 hours from now I always have more fun to make a animation then actualy watch it.
