Kazan is very good at annoying me sometimes, but he's also genuinly passionate - far as I can tell - about his coding, so why not?

It depends, of course, how much he wants to do it...

maybe we shouldn't even have a project manager as such, just a loose group of coders who communicate to prevent overlap of work?

thats what i think aswell, there should not be a "Manager", there should be a group of programmers that all work as a team to release "unofficial official updates" if u get what i mean, these all work together in much the same way as TBP works, where no _one_ person leads the team, the whole team has to decide as a whole for something to take place. I think that would produce a much better enviroment to work in, and would also produce a better engine at the end of it.

Something that occured to me (and I'm throwing it up purely for discussion) is that if you guys host this, you'll have the two highest-profile projects in the FS community - the B5P has a lot of external following, and source code editing is obvious. Anyhow, just something that occured to me as I was reading some posts.

Thats about all we have

And I get the impression that nobody knows who we are sometimes. I think until I posted at the near death VBB, 3/4ths of those guys had never been to FSW or checked it out at all.

I don't want to lock horns with HLP or anyone else...this is a tight nit community and I want it to stay that way. Anyone on the HLP staff (and anyone else of course) is welcome to be part of the team if they are interested and I think the whole thing should be VERY transparent to the community.

No reason why the 2 can't work together...don't forget F2Sector, either - http://www.sectorgame.com/f2s - I notice Hunter has already set up a new forum there, too.

Just remember that Project Management is not the same thing as programming, and it's possibly more complicated and time consuming....

I realize that...... but people outside the community barely know HLP exists. For example, in that IGN report, you're quoted and there's a link to VW. Has there been anything like that for HLP? Not to my knowledge, which sucks.

Hell, we don't even have a link off Freespace2.com

IMO, the project manager's jobs are:
1) Keep the project's members on task
2) Organize the work being done
3) Recruit any members needed, and make sure that they are qualified, whether they do this personally or pass them on to the appropriate member to make sure they have the right skills
4) Procure the resources needed to continue the project
5) Determine what the community wants by reading the message boards, and/or posting polls
6) Manage releasing the products made by the team and distributing them

All in all, they should have good PR skills first and programming second. If they need info about programming, they can just ask a programmer-so it's not a huge deal. Having the best or one of the best programmers as the manager is a bad idea, since it detracts from the time they have to code.

I think there should be an intra comunity effort, forums here at HLP, warpstorm, f2s, ect...
not one "offical" site, but a common comunication set, maybe a mailing list and a few internal forums(one here and one at HLP)
I think HLP has some claim to this as they were just starting the FSF thing and the upgrade to there forums to add the FSF forum is probly why it went out right when it did...
(I think one of you should have given some sort of headz up that something big was going down and not to do anything stupid to there site)

Bobboau: We didn't have nearly that much advanced warning. The timeframe was less than 48 hours.
