adding newtonian physics is possible, and could be implemented in ships.tbl or a similar file, though I don't think it should be a priority for Kazan and his team..

alternate mission endings would be easy to code, espescially considering that FS2 files are simply text files.

I'd like to add "3D effects" and "decals" to the wish list.

My advise to Kazan's team would be to begin by duplicating the FS2 engine, ie. having .POFs moving around, displaying .ANIs in the right way, using .TBL files correctly, and playing .FS2 missions through the same way FS2 does...

the next step would be to start coding the extra functionality: ie support for advanced models, advanced mission functions, etc.

Legally, I don't think there's a problem, considering people would need FS2 to play FS2 with your new engine.

As far as I understand the only thing that wouldn't work would be the original MVE cutscenes, because they're Interplay's patented format.. that's no big loss though, considering the cutscenes are pretty poor by today's standards anyway.

Good luck to you.. I almost wish I was a programmer and could join in

One more thing: I think it'd be a good idea to provide some kind of scripting language allowing modders to code extra functions into the engine without having to recompile the source.

Actually...some sort of MOD interface so you could select and turn on and off tables would be handy. So you could run multiple data trees like I do and just select the required data tree.

i said in the topics on the HLP bb... im not reading the stuff over here.. because im not the only person on the board

btw we're already working on the POF Version 3000 [3.0.0] (FreeSpace 2's POF version is 2117 [2.1.17])

see the appropriate links and the top of the thread..

this is mostly because all the things you're saying here were already addressed

If you're going to crosspost, then read replies in both threads. Otherwise it's rather rude to use the VWBB as a ground to just dump everyone to HLP. If people are trying to give you advice, the least you can do is read their suggestions here; even if it means a few duplicates (hey, that just means the ideas are popular.)

Oh. And this belongs in the Freespace forum, considering it's not TBP. So I'll be moving it now.

Having the fighters actually dock with a main vessel instead of just jumping/warping out...

The truth is Freespace 2 is old. I think I can speak for everyone when I say that we need something new other than campaigns.

If they wont make an FS3 then we should modify the hell out of the version we have.

based on the replies by DaveB inthis thread, the only thing actually stopping Volition making FS3 is a license held by a defunct company...

if any sort of persuasion gets THQ the license, then i doubt V would turn down the job...
