Quite frankly, if I have to die in a nuclear attack, I wanna BE Ground Zero. Death by radiation does NOT sound like my idea of fun. Even the so-called 'Clean' nukes pump out massive amounts of radiation on detonation, they just don't leave as much fallout.

But then, I have no illusions about war being neat and clean.

You said it ShadowBoy, I neither wanna die in radiation. But if thats my destiny I would commit sepuku, even without assistant (sepuku or harakiri consist two persons, one who is going to die stab in stomach or womens cut their troaths and assistant which cut your head of, just after stabbing).

You see I really don't want to die in radiation.

US Govornment instructions in case of commie nuclear attack:
1) Go to the middle of the room
2) Bend over
3) Position head between legs
4) Lean forward
5) KISS YOUR ASS GOODBYE!

Somebody had to say it.

I wouldn't go so far as ritual suicide.... But if there's a nuke coming toward MY town, and I don't have time to get away, I wanna park my car at ground zero, slap on the sunscreen and sunglasses, and smile and wave at the approching MIRV in Vir fashion.

However, i consider nuclear war to be rather unlikely at this point in time. Nculear terrorism, on the other hand..... But then, I don't live in an area likely to have an al-quaeda terrorist with a vengeance trip, misguided views about his own beliefs, and a nuclear briefcase come marching in.

correction..the biggest Nuke Bomb is calculated to have 100Mt..russian Czar Bomba..the never had the courage to test it at full capacity so last layer of it was "brake" so the bomb reach half of the designed force..it resulted in 60 Mt detonation in novaya zemleya

Sorry for any confusion, I know current warhead sizes, my 500MT remark was about Babylon 5 scales.

Incorrect. One kilogram of AM completely consumed with an equal amount of matter will result in a detonation of roughly 43 megatons.

Thanks, I was just waiting for that reply

I three orders of magnitude by using grams not kilograms.

D'oh!

Heh heh.

No prob.

BTW, a Helios has something like 130 kilots of AM in it. Ka-BOOM!

Russians ARE weird . So it's not a miracle if their definition of courage is different from the one that others possess. And one thing you should remember whem talking about this is the cold war. Most of the prejudices that people (read: Americans/Russians and those who were unlucky enough to be trapped between them like us) have about the greatest powers of the first half of the 20th century are originally pure propaganda.

I find the idea of a glow-in-the-dark glass plain of 40 km in diameter a monstrous mistake. Little Boy and its friend were a mistake that should never be repeated. If there is a higher power determining our destony, it definetely should prevent further MILITARY use of the enormous binding powers within the nucleus of every atom. By turning that power against each other again we'd definetely rule out an excellent source of energy for millennia. It would never be forgotten. It would spread to every corner of the world in whispers and rumors leaving already miserable people to live in the deadly shadow of a mushroom cloud, to return to the dark ages of the cold war and permanent energy crisis.

Remember Mr. Oppenheimer: I am Death, the destroyer of worlds.

first off, like someone already said, there will be no leftover anitmatter from a reaction. If anitmatter escaped containment, it would react with any matter, and react with an equal amount.

second, a quote i read somewhere: "i know not what world war 3 will be fought with, but world war 4 will be fought with sticks and stones."

Only if there was any matter around (i.e. the warhead was imperfectly balanced).

If there wasn't then it would just not do anything until it hit the next ship to fly into it

In regards to hiroshima and nagasaki;

If it were not for Little Boy and Fat Man, then millions of more deats would have been added to world war IIs already excessive list.

Had we invaded Japan, they would have fought harder. The United States would have been forced to commit complete genocide to end the war, as no japanese person old enough to operate any kind of weapon would have stopped fighting until they were dead. Death with honor and all that.

By convincing then that there was no honor in being flash-vaporized one city at a time, we managed to end the war. It is one of the darker chapters of american history.

I honestly hope I'm never placed in a position where I have to make such a decision.
