Hmm.. I just use the "bank when pressed" function.. press joystick button 2, then push the stick diagonally.

to be honest, I don't use fs2 keys whatsoever.. I spent around 20 minutes reassigning them to X-wing keys... or at least as close to X-wing keys as I can get. Why bother learning new ones when they're all redefinable?

I usually end up readefining all keys in other space sims to Freespace 2 key configurations.

while we're on the subject of star furys, does any1 in the design staff know how to change the deceleration characteristics? or how to make the ship fly backwards? Because if i recall correctly, auroras have nice big retro thrusters on the front of the engine pods just a thought. And as for blasting nials, those 40mm cannons work just fine.

Its not the dampening its rather you stick stings, youll probably have the stick configured to manuever the hardest right on its phisical limits, go to its controler software and make maximun manuever to be achieved at say 60% of maximum stcik deflection.
that way smaller imputs makes your ship react faster and more precisely. increasing a tad of deadzone may also help. Try it. I had that problem too.
The idea came from the fact that in the F-16, any small imput will be felt and the stick movement is rather limited. However the pilot can perform high precision manuevers, and it feels quite confortable predictable.
Try to duplicate this (todays sticks are precise enogh for this)but do not overdo it. too much can also make it uncontrolable.

Hmm I still say your freedom is limited. Try my manuever out.
can you fire and/or kick afterburner at the same time you execute the spiral manuever? I dont think so, unless you can somehow perform contorsionism with your fingers and press 4 buttoms at the same time you move the stich around. You can raly make some wild mooves with twist axis, some quite elegant like the bonehead manuever like someone described it ealier.

lets see - thumb holds down button 2, rolling.. index finger fires.. index finger of left hand presses TAB key. I dislike the twist rudder, it distracts me. If I had more money I'd buy rudder pedals..

For your information, I am using a Wingman Force. But I will try to configure it.

And playing TBP without a joystuick is really difficult. I tried once when I didn't have a joystick yet. I'm surprised my mouse didn't become damaged.

Posted by CptWhite on 01-07-2002 07:06 PM:

im sorry but the mouse is king when it comes to aiming, try this setup :

mouse, move around
left button, rotate anti clockwsie
right button, rotate clockwise
middle button, match target speed

TAB, afterburner
W, forward move
A, target subsystem in recticle
S, slow down
R, target shp in recticle
D, target closest enemy
F, target closest friendly
Enter, locate nearest support ship

Thats the main keys, the rest are default i think like

C, command menu
Space, secondary fire
Delete [ ] and + - 0 for speed settings

Now this setup rocks

Geez capt white LOL you.. you.. fly like that????
what hapens if you want to make a 180º turn arround??? I mean for some manuevers you must lift the mouse up and center it on the your table again several times, uless your table is as big as your dinning room one!! I Imagine what its like when you have to evade in a furball, complete utter mouse mess.
I remenber I used the mose in tie fighter but that was only usefull to aim at distant targets.

it only lacks one sayng that f-22 pilots will fly with mice intead of sitcks!!!

You just use the num keys to turn quickly. For me Primary Fire is mouse button one.

Unbelievable... I ended up on a forum with mouse freeks....

Posted by Triggy on 01-08-2002 12:05 PM:

Simple, you have one hand on the mouse for fine targeting, firing and afterburner, and the other on the numerical keypad for rapid manouvres where precision is unimportant. Also on the keypad you have speed and targeting controls mapped. I can't see how a joystick can be more precise yet still retain every standard control within easy reach.

BTW, the Joystick is more fun and feels more realistic but is not quite as good as using the mouse.

the joystick is more fun, but you use the mouse... why do you play the game, I ask, if not to have fun?

It depends, I use both in different circumstances. Trouble is I don't have a joystick with more than one fire button (bog standard basic joystick) so the game is very hard to play with it. I am not going to be getting a new one any time soon either . Besides, I'm not that bothered one way or the other.

Look, I use a Logitek Wingman Inteceptor. The best thing about this joystick is that the rudder control is actually under the main trigger, thus enabling me to boost, twist and fire simultaneously. An added bonus is than there is a clever button where the right hand middle finger sits that lets you select the nearest hostile. So, infact, I can twist, boost, fire and select the nearest hostile all at the same time.

Sidewiner Precision 2.

Trigger number 1 is my primary fire key, trigger number 2 is my seconadry fire key. The twisting axis on the joystick lets me do rolls while making another manuver. Sometimes I use the throttle, but the default key setup is just fine for me otherwise.

Go joysticks! Maybe I should start a poll.

Saitek ST110 -
trigger = fire.
Button2 = bank when pressed.
Button 3 = fire secondary.
Button 4 = target under reticle.

(X-wing fans will appreciate that I'd love the functions for button 2 and 4 to both be use same button, but c'est la vie).

How do I use the other controls, I hear you ask.. well, I come equipped with a right hand, and a left hand..
