no it's that they use that system to track what you are doing - you're every move and purchase

From what little actual usage of XP I have, plus my research on it I think that it looks to be a good step in the right direction for Microsoft (though they are by no means there yet).

As for the anti-piracy protection, I support this as a paying user of most of the software that I use. If anything, if the anti-piracy procedures work, software prices will drop due to there being more paying customers for the product. This in my opinion is a good thing, others may disagree, not liking the lack of free software.

Alpha, I find that remark very insulting. Labeling me as a software pirate is not the best way to get on my good side. Further, I am of the opinion that if I purchase a new OS, I am not restricted to installing it on only one machine, and if I own multiple machines then I should be allowed to install the new OS onto them if I see fit. Piracy is copying off the CD and sending it to your friends, or making dupes and selling them. As long as the computers I install the OS to never leave my ownership, it shouldn't be considered piracy. And even if the EULA prohibits doing this, who actually reads the license agreements anyways?? Not all that many.

Now, before this thread devolves into a massive flame war over what is and isn't software pirating, let's get back to the matter at hand: trying to help Mewgen solve his problem.

Yes im sure they are just doing that now....and not before....pfft...if anyone wanted to trace your whereabouts and your purchases, the credit card companies can do it in a second. I mean, thats the whole idea.

Whatever.

Kazan: No site I've visited has said this - care to provide a bit of linkage to back that claim up? (Oh yeah ... privacy doesn't really exist in the online world anyway...I fail to see how this is anything new.)

JC: Well ... let's be honest, then. I don't care about being on your good side - because I never tried to be, nor did I try to be on your bad side. So don't take this as a personal attack, because this isn't and that previous post wasn't. Second, your opinion that you should be able to copy your OS onto all your computers is just that - opinion. Legally, you've never been allowed to do that, so in effect you have been a software pirate. However, a harmful one? No. So I do understand your frustration; you've been doing something and by extension assumed you could do so legally. Whoops! Microsoft says 'nope' and in this case, they hold all the cards.

Your definition of pirating is also wrong ... let me explain. The Fair Use Act allows for a user to make a single copy - on any media they see fit, from what I understand - for backup purposes only. Hence, if I make a CD-R copy of, say, my new CD and leave my original at home and take the CD-R with me (hey, wouldn't want it getting stolen now) that IS legal. I'm only using one copy and the other (in this case the original) is being used as a backup.
Copying an OS onto two computers - both of which are in active use - is NOT a backup copy and therefore IS piracy.
Whether it should be that way or shouldn't be that way is completly immaterial - I'm arguing what is.
Oh and you don't read EULAs? Too bad since you agree to them by clicking OK whether you read 'em or not. So that point's kinda dead too.

Next time, please argue with a little more fact and a little less opinion. I have nothing against you personally, nor is this a flame-war just because I disagree.

*sigh*

Windows can't send any info out to M$ without asking user to do so.
Microsoft would be in bad **** if it does that.

I believe someone did a test with a data-transfer check program proving that MS wasn't actually lying when they said what data got sent to MS HQ ... an encrypted hash to register, nothing more or less.
Can't prove it off-hand though ... but I'll try to dig up the info.
