I gotta say, any game trying to integrate Marine boarding ops-with a space battle isn't gonna be a big hit with the FPS guys. Ya' know why? They'll never get to play, we fighter jocks will slag their transprots before they even get close to our capships. I find it hard to believe that nobody shot down the breaching pod in "Severed Dreams". Oh well, i guess Garibaldi wanted to kick some ass too.

Supposedly there were several pods (maybe six) according to some sources, and the Starfuries can only engage targets when already unengaged. By sending in the pods with the majority of the fighters Clark's forces ensured that there was a greater chance of one getting through but lower chance of all of them getting through.

True, true, Sheridan's order not to fire first did put his fighters at a disadvantage (got a bunch of them killed too), but I think between b5's fighters and the two friendly Omegas, the fighter strengths were about even. It would have been pretty simple to put a couple 'furys on "repel boarders" duty. How much damage can a modified escape pod absorb anyway?
Additionaly, in the clip where Clark's forces are closing I saw two breaching pods.

yeah, if it was easy to make a game that had everything , they would have by now.
Anyway, volition is a company that only creates the game, they dont have the resources to fund one, they need ppl with money to come in like Interplay for Freespace and THQ for Red Faction, then Volition can make games... and the worst part is Interlay ends up owning FS, and THQ owns Red Faction.
so even tho Volition makes them, the company providing the funds gets to own the game, profits and the rights to it.

Actually, my wonderful game idea would not require a supercomputer to run it. You see, for single player, it only needs to render what you're doing at the time (Like flying a fighter, or invading a capship, or so forth.) and at that, it only needs to render what's going on in hte 'immediate' area. For space, anything within a light second or so (and then only if there's something out there big enough to need detail at that range.) Anything farther out is either not rendered, or is a two-dimensional sprite. (Pre-quake technology, for all you kids.)
In a planetary op, you only render what the average fps, hovertank sim, or atmospheric flight sim would render, plus maybe out to the edge of the atmosphere, possibly 120km. (To make planetary bombardment possible)
For boarding operations, use something like the red faction engine.
For multiplayer, you would need a dedicated server, which would just figure relative positions of everything, everywhere, and what damage has been inflicted to what. (so that marines boarding a ship will have to worry about friendly fire from capships and fighters. But they would also be able to comm in something like 'hey, got a heavy blast door keeping us out of the forward section. Get a lock on the beacon I'm dropping, and plant a torpedo on it in 30 seconds.')
Imagine how much the FPS people would hate us then, they're about to bag their fiftieth enemy, when all of a sudden they see a flash, and get a happy little message about how they were fragged by a friendly destroyer. Oops. Sorry, thought that was THREE seconds.
But you see, they could have ground combat to keep them happy. Why involve yourself in high-risk ship intrusion when you can quite happily cower in a bunker with a sniper rifle.
Hey, I even have the perfect universe for this; ROBOTECH! (The b5 community was not the only ones to have their much-hyped-about flight sim cancelled on them.) Or better yet, buddy pack this with a bab5 game using the same engine.

Shadowboy, that is what I ment to. I didnt mean render the ground combat, the space combat and boarding ship combat, what I ment was do one mission at a time. Eg. If you are close to a planet (very close), and in a space ship, there could be inner atmosphere missions, where the detail on the ground isnt as good as though you where a troop fighting on the ground, but you could see key instalations, then, all of a sudden, you could be called back up to defend a dropship or a planetary assault ship, or heck, you have to defend a planet FROM a planetary assault.

You would still have to make three separate games and then seamlessly integrate them. From the point of view of a software house it would be much more economical to market the game as three separate games, making slightly less profit on each individually but much more overall.

I recently heard of a game that includes some of these qualities. Into the Maelstrom ( I think, it did get bad score on name) it's not near finished yet but it will have FPS and Space flight rolled into one game. looks pretty good from what I saw.
Why don't you try petitioning Interplay, there must be a couple of hundred members of this forum and you could encourage others to lend there names, a petition from a few thousand odd people might encourage them to make another game in the FS franchise.

You'd need like fifty thousand, plus since Interplay got bought out by Vivendi/Titus or whatever and Volition's with THQ, can you name a developer that's under the Interplay banner you'd want doing FS3?

Maybe I should have titled this thread "wishful thinking."
Yeah I know there won't be an FS3, I'm kinda glad considering I can't afford to upgrade for a while. On that note I would like to thank not only the TBP crew, but every modder out there who takes the time to keep lazy slobs like me entertained. May your bandwidth always be swift, and your games lag-less.
