Actually Omegas can do the very same as Novas.
They are based on same hull design. Omega is more advanced version of Nova. It's true that Omegas are not usually used for planetary assaults, there was enough Novas to do the job.

Not much else is needed for planetary assaults except large army of marines and ground attack ships. If a Nova can carry them, then an Omega can too.

I'm pretty sure that each of the destroyers over Mars in Endgame had a crew of 1,000 (Franklin said something about 30 of those whacked-out telepaths would be sacrificed for 30,000 lives). A Minbari Sharlin has a crew of about 600 (JMS stated this on the Lurker's Guide; Severed Dreams), so it wouldn't be illogical to assume a "less advanced" Earther ship would have more. Not to mention that the crew complement of the destroyer's would vary from mission to mission. Like pera noted, in IIRT the interrogator said that 500+ people had died on board the Roanoke while in Crusade, Gideon stated 300-some had gone down with the Cerberus (another Omega-class destroyer). Bit of a difference between the two in terms of crew size.

I never watched Crusade so I could be way off here but is it
possible people escaped on lifepods from the Cerberus hence
the difference in loss of life?

Another point, I don't think the Nova is ideally suited to troop
transport. It has no artificial gravity which means that all the
Marines and their equipment would have to be strapped down
almost continually or it could get quite dangerous onboard,
what with a couple of hundred marines literally bouncing off the
walls

Nope, the Cerberus was killed by a EA/Shadow hybrid which blew it to pieces with a single shot, so no-one had time to escape.

Its an Earth Force experiemental ship using Shadow technology. Before anyone asks again, yes its in the MOD, or will be eventually.

The ship went out of control and destroyed the Cerberus. Only, then Ensign Gideon, survived the attack because he was in an EVA suit repairing damage.

The Cerberus was already damaged when the Black Ops ship made a second pass.

Well, it is not a new ship actually. Seen in Crusade.
And because Crusade was canned we didn't really found out what happened to the mysterious EA Shadow Hybrid in the end.
Scripts said that Excalibur found secret EA outpost where this ship was from, not sure if it was said in the scripts but I think that Excalibur destroyed it.

The crew numbers are a problem, first in the Sierra B5 Reference CD-Rom the crew is stated at 250, in "Intersections in Real Time" when the interrogator is reading Sheridan's Charges, he says:

"...the murder of 547 officers and crew on board the EAS Roanoke..." (referring to the events in Severed Dreams)

Then two episodes later in "Endgame" Franklin says:

"...up there, there are three dozen destroyers with 1000 crew apiece..."

Its possible that in wartime the Destroyers have extra troops on-board, the Cerburus was destroyed in peacetime so its likely to have less troops.

Maybe in peacetime they have 250 crew plus 50-100 troops and in wartime thats increase to 250-750 troops?

The shadow hybrid was also featured in the Technomage trilogy PII

Not sure on the time difference (not au-fait with B5), but technological advancements would allow the ships to operate effieciently with less crew, so less would be needed.

Hmm

I remeber reading somewere EA after the Earth/Minbari war whent on to build the biggest fllet of the all the races...Since most of them were tech-superior it was in the best intrest of Earth Gov to have huge quantity's of ships....

And I belive cap ship counts are in the hundreds...20,000 cap ships would take whole planets to crew
