LW=Great, if you can afford it. for casual rendering, or even for (some) professional jobs, Blender is MUCH better. Face it, Lightwave it WAYYYYYYYY to expencive. Blender can do 90+% of what Lightwave can, and some things better, for FREE. (The things LW REALLY tops Blender on are:

Hypervoxuals, lighting, rendering engine, surface materials, and possibly the modeling engine, and the Radiosity.

Thats IT. (I know, I've checked)

this is a WiP shot rendered in Blender, note that I have not applied Motion blur to the weapons, and miss aligned the flare for the beam:

and this is a ship I modeled in less the 8 minutes in Blender, and textured useing Blender procederals:

whats REALLY great is that I still don't know what even a FOURTH of what Blender is capable of!!!

The 2nd image is nice, saw your post on b5mg, but don't the whitestar shots need some colour?

Truly awesome work, the only problem might be the colorfade... If you have large areas with blending color change (eg. nebulae on the background) reducing color palette to 256 will cause annoyingly sharp color bands to appear. It can be seen in both FS' videos. It ruins the credibility, but hey, it's not the meat, it's the motion .

640 x 320 x 32bpp x 30fps

22100khz Stereo Audio

Intel Indeo 5.1 compression - audio and video is seperate files - then i can get V to MVE compress them

You've improved quite a bit since I last saw any of your work.

I've been doing quite a lot of low-poly modeling for Freespace 2, you know, extrusions from circles and all that shizz.

I wish I could get the grips on Blender's (awful) UV mapping system.

The problem i always run into is making beams appear good against nebulas. A beam can look great on black, but terrible on nebula's (because of the inner and outer area transparencies usually), and the glow effect looks good on beams but can greatly change depending on background colour.

Kazan, guess we're really lucky that the mve compressor accepts indeo, cause I wouldn't want to have transfered over a couple gigs of tga stills!

Also, if mve's are 8bpp does the codec switch palettes like smacker?

Yes there is going to be an intro movie, and I should know since I'm working on it right now

As for a release date, I'll be posting a divx for the team to ok sometime this week, and then onto sound editing and mve conversion. I don't expect that the last two will take really long, but I have no idea since I don't have any control over them.

I remember Adam Pletcher saying something way back in the day that if someone sent them a movie and asked really nice they could encode it to MVE; I don't know if they still can now that V is owned by THQ and Interplay is owned by Titus. (Reference to that whole MVE2EXE fiasco...hey, damn, I lost my copy of that in my HD crash 3 months ago )

I'd ask Adam though, he could give you a definite yes/no.

Don't worry everything will be taken care of for the mve encoding part.
