Hopefully some good ol ships will return...but in 100 years...I don't know about that...After all...I rarly see fighter planes from WWII anymore...Think about in another 100 years from now But I am sure there will be somewhere in FS3 that there will be a fenris that has been rebuild for show and the like

Its true that we don't see fighter plays serving in todays cream of the crop front line airforces, but...in World War 2, the lifetime of a plane was also much shorter than it is now.

The F/A-18 Hornet I largely consider to be one of the newest frontline fighters, and yet its over 20 years old now. Meaning that the Falcon and the Eagle are older than that. The B-52 has been around since the 60's and its expected that when its retired from service, it will have served for 80 years.

On the flipside, the Wildcat was the frontline carrier fighter for the first year of the war. It had been in service for several years before that. Combat with the Japanese Zero proved that it was ill equipped to deal with dogfighting it so they developed other tactics. However, by 1943, the Corsair and Hellcat had replaced the Wildcat and were much more capable and deadly planes. By 1948 the Hellcat had been replaced by the Bearcat, and so on.

In 2300-2400's...100 years for a particular vessel may not be so far fetched. Definately not for frontline fighters and warships, but even if FS went into the future, older craft could definately be still in there.

I agree...More than likely you won't see an orion on the frontlines...You never seen them in the front lines as much as in the first freespace...it was the hecates taking the role...So if it does happen...You won't see hecates in the front lines...You'll see a new destoryer taking that role....after all....Freespace was kinda modeled off from the WorldWars

It's going to be...sniff...sad to see the Orion go. That was a ...sniff...beautiful ship.

But Icefire hasa point. 100 years may not be unreasonable. After all, the expected lifetime of the USS Enterprise-D was 100 years. (I don't know if anyone here like Star Trek or not.)

I would hope to see more lawless regions of known space, where not everything is under strict Allied control...or whatever government exists at that time.

And if Freespace was kinda modeled off from the WorldWars...I would think the shivans be something like the germans..and the terrans being the allied powers...but what about the vasudans? hehe I can't see where they would belong if they was modeled off from WW

It is perfectly feasable for a ship to last 100 years. it is mearly a question of weather or not the owners are will ing to either maintain its existing equipement or are willing to replace old componants with componants that are new and/or improved. how easy the design of the ship in question makes it to do this type of mantanance and/or replacement. and of course, weather the design of the ship is still useful or not.

a case in point would be the Iowa Class battleships of the US Navy. they have participated in WWII, Korea, Vietnam, and the Gulf War. while they are almost 50 years old, the technology involved in the operation of their main and secondary batteries has changed little since the early part of this century with the most important improvement being the addition of Radar Rangefinders. in fact, the Iowa Class Battleships still rely on the Mechanical Gunnery Computers. they are still equipeped with Optical sights on the number 2 and number 3 turrets with the unit on turret 1 being remove to reduce maintanence requirements. the main propulsion units on these ships are still in perfect working order and can propel these ships in excess of 30 knots which works out to be a little bit more than 40 Miles per hour. again, she uses standard steam boilers and steam turbine wich have changed only gradually through the last century with the last great change being the switch from heavy fuel oil (filtered crude) to high density kerosene, witch of course cause the entire fuel distribution system on all 4 battleships to leak because the new fuel is far lighter than heavy fuel oil and took 4 months to repair completely.
as for upgrades, thoes ships wich were reactivate in the 80's were given all of the lates in offensive and defensive weapons as well as hapitability upgrades and information and firecontrol upgrades wich gave these ships capabilities unheard of when they were built.
while a Orian class Dreadnought is an old ship, with proper upgrades to its reactors, engines and weapons systems, it will certainly be able to give a hecate a run for its money, especially if it travells in a proper Battlegroup, and especially if she is paired with another orian.

Don't you mean the Orion class Destroyer?

After the grandeur of FS2, the next game would have to expand even further, I agree. I would:

1) Set it quite a way into the future - 50+ years. That's a nice balance between allowing for the effects of FS2 to wear off/be seen (ie. the supernova) and too long as to be unrecognisable.

2) Expand the universe. Give us more systems to play with/explore. This opens up for technical improvements like flying near proper 3D planets, like in Freelancer, and odd systems like black holes, and so on.

3) Deepen the playing experience, but only for those that want it. The best example I can think of this is strategic bombing - ie. rather than having bog-standard bombs, have specialised ones, and give ships varied armour over their hulls. It'd be cool to be able to Geo-Mod a Deimos...

It would be cool to have invincibilty on and have a supernova hit you and you live.

Freespace is just following the same path Descent did.
Simple as that.

I hope that BWO will have realistic battlegroups.

In Fs1 and PATICULARLY Fs2 extreemly valuable destroyers, nigh carriers (hecate) were deployed with NO escort. Not a single cruiser.

Judging from the power of FS ships a destroyer should have on station at all times either 2 cruisers (preferably and aeolus and fenris) or a corvette.

Command has the ability to comprehend tactical concepts like that of a small dead cabbage.

WOOOHOOOOOO Fenris roxors all

BTW why didnt the Terran recollect the downed Orion at Deneb it didnt explode or anything just got a large hole in it, atleast pirates would want it as a CAPship
