If we're getting into a pathetic versus thread here, at least FS v.s. B5 somewhat works due to the ship characteristics having some basis on reality. (I-War v.s. B5 works out perfectly)

The ships in FreeSpace are slower and less manuverable, however their hull structures and firepower are immense.

The fact that the ISA would not have knowledge of Shivan electronics systems or shielding would mean that they would be in the position of our heroes in FreeSpace 1. (the only reason a targeting solution was ever found was due to the GTI's experience with Shivan technologies during covert studies during the great war)

As for the power of the Shivans, their numbers are by far greater than anything in the B5 universe, and their technology is about equivalent to that of the aliens in "Thirdspace" due to the shielding systems.

I'm not gonna get into this anymore than that for my own good

OK the only games shows etc you can do VS treads on are

Wingcommander similar to FS in tech
Starlancer similar to FS in tech
Babylon5 similar to FS in tech
Starwars similar to FS in tech
Homeworld similar to FS in tech

any problemws with this and I can add additional info...

and it is in war that we progress and evolve ourself beyond our wildest dreams

In GTVA vs ISA, I think the Terrans and Vasudans would put up a good fight but would be overrun by the ISA in the end. The ISA has faster ships and probably many more than the GTVA (we're looking at a two race alliance vs. at least five others). The shields on FS2 fighters might give them an edge, but the fast moving ships (espicially the Whitestars) of the ISA would allow them to evade beam fire with at least some success.

Posted by Blak on 03-04-2001 12:06 PM:

That faster ships thing would really freak out GTVA because B5 ships seem to move km/s
when Freespace ships move m/s...

I remember a B5 episode where there were a
Starfury wing closing in on a target.
The wing leader said somethin like:
Distance to target is 123KM....110KM...
99KM...and so on. And he said those every second!

Ultimately, given the similar goals and ideals the GTVA and ISA would be more likely to ally than fight (barring an unlikely diplomatic snafu).

Posted by Ace on 03-04-2001 09:26 PM:

Actually, the comment earlier than you can do a WingCommander or Starlancer v.s. FS is incorrect.

First of all, there is so little factual information on WC ships (their specifications are within their own arbitrary terms) as well as there are no common grounds to judge a WC ion cannon versus a weapon in FreeSpace since the terms within the WC series for the weapon's power change so rapidly. (and this is not due to evolving technology, it's due to inconsistentcy)

FreeSpace, though not perfect, has some conceptual basis on reality with how the weaponry is thought out, there are some basic kilotonnages for warheads and from that you can deduce shield strength as well as deduce how a B5 weapon would affect that with it's energy output.

In WC or Starlancer, you can't do that, they are more comparable with Star Trek due to the techno-babble being simply babble.

Also, on the comment of Starfury speeds, that is due to the vessels operating in newtonian physics.

Now to find out how an FS ship would handle in a newtonian setting, overall replace the top speed for acceleration (the top speed of 65m/s for an Apollo is roughly based on newtonian acceleration, Volition had a physiscist help with some homework to make the physics work well and fun for FS, and the numbers have some reality basis), you find that an Apollo will outrun most anything.

Interesting...
So if a slow ass GTF Apollo can outrun almost everything then I can sit into my Valkyrie with no worries at all.
With a wing of Nial at my back I can escape them with my afterburners? (me flying 165 m/s?)

Try to catch me Minbari bastard!
Mwahahahaha!!!

Hmm, that explains why I like GTF Apollo so much

It's also the best GTF fighter in FS1

Posted by Sirius on 03-06-2001 07:58 PM:

I don't see why it would be hard actually. B5/GTVA ships both have a basically common origin, or at least design (as Terrans played a large part in the design of both). Shivans were entirely alien, and that's why we couldn't detect them (plus the fact that they were probably already stealthed). Not to mention - most GTVA ships, including the Colossus, do not have a stealth mode.

Posted by g2megatron on 03-07-2001 06:09 AM:

Stuff it Ace hehe...

they are equally balanced and is in about the same period of tech...

just put all fighters ships have em duke out in the end the would be about equal and

Posted by Snipes on 03-07-2001 06:46 AM:

But who's to say B5 sensors could read GTVA ship signatures? Like Ice said, we couldn't see the shivans until we captured and disected em...

The B5 ships would be sitting ducks... Especially if they arrived when the Hawkwood was attacking the Arcadia, and the Collosus entered...

And if you wanna think versus some more...

GTVA vs B5 + NTF

Posted by Blak on 03-07-2001 07:02 PM:

So here we reach another interesting detecting issue: Can GTVA detect Minbari ships?
as you all know The Earth Alliance couldn`t
lock onto Minbari ships during the
Earth-Minbari War.

I think GTVA cannot lock onto Minbari ships
either until their sensors are adjusted to do so.

The SJ is 8K long!!! as for the SSD that is a "Super Star Destroyer" !!

To show the Mimbari 'stelth' effect you nead to have the lead indcator set wrong ie objects have an invisable extention so their 'middle' is just aft of the end of the ship, as for star wars better sheilds, weaker hulls and better lasers (not beams) as for ISA White stars trashing GTVA, not so easy Thunderbolts hurt them alot when they vs the Shadow skined Omegas!! I would be worse if fighter had sheilds!!

No it isn't. It's only a bit under 6 km long.

Posted by Mr. Fury on 03-12-2001 04:28 PM:

And SSD is Shivan Super Destroyer, so in this case not Super Star Destroyer.

Posted by Jabu on 03-12-2001 05:49 PM:

No, the sig's owner said it was a Super Star Destroyer... so who are we to say otherwise

Posted by KillMeNow on 03-13-2001 01:01 AM:

talking of thigns liek speed star trek ships go in fractions of the speed of light

and who cares about teh size of the ships the enterprise might not be huge but it is loaded up with quantum torps and phasers more than a match for anything the shivans or for that matter the B5 races

and a super star destroyer is also more than a match for the shivans and b5 races and the sathanus isn't anywhere near as big as an SSD

also someone said that maybe a death star could take out a sathanus with one shot

MAYBE?????????????????

MAYBE???????????????

it can blow up a planet nothing in the freespace arsenal can match that as for blowing up the star well that wasn't a weapon and they can do that in the starwars universe too

Posted by Vlad on 03-13-2001 01:50 AM:

Remember the death star lanches a HUGE beam, it would be like killing an ant with a skud milsle. The death star could destroy one, only if it stood still, and didn't manuever to avid it. The enterprise could be destroyed by the ISA, and the GTVA because although the star trek series does show two or three fighters, they never use them, think of how hard it would be to hit a dozen fighters zooming around, it might be possible, it would just be hard, the fighters could do massive damage before being destroyed.and remember blind spots on the enterprise.
