they would probably use any starships in the area, whether they are freaighter, civilian, fighter, or capital ship. if they were desperate, they might even tow stations into poosition for this. it would be about the only way short of a planetary sheild to protect against the radiation wave.

That's not the point. The point is that (aside from attempts at modifications by some of the more desperate people on the boards ) the capital ships in the FreeSpace universe don't have shields. The Lucifer was the only one, which was why it was so special. The largest ships with shields are bombers.

As for the confusion with starsystems and the distances between them, think of it like this. You live in an apartment on the 20th floor of a building. Your living room wall is also the outer wall of the building. On the other side of that wall is a space of 2 yards or so, and then another building just like yours - living room wall and all. Physically you are around 6-10 yards from someone in the other living room of the other building (Sol and Alpha Centauri). However, in order to get to that other apartment, you need to take the elevator downstairs, walk around the block, enter the other building, take the elevator upstairs and finally enter the other apartment, which is 20 feet away from where you started.

So while Sol and Alpha Centauri are quite close physically, the shortest route to get from one to the other (in terms of number of jumps) is via Delta Serpentis, Beta Aquilae, Antares and Vasuda.

The Jump Node Map simply (or not so simply) lists the systems that are connected by jump nodes. It does not really signify their real-space proximity. However, the majority of the systems listed in the map are, in reality, the closer systems to Sol. http://www.solstation.com/ has a nice 3d map where you can see stars like Wolf 359, AlphaC, Barnard's Star, Luyten 726-6a, Ross 128, etc in relation to Earth.

[EDIT] Ooops, I didn't notice that Ice had already defended me. Nice one, IceFire!

And Turnsky, I would say of Snipes what Freud said of women: "Snipes...is the dark continent."

Also, nice analogy sandwich, I like it.

Speaking of light years and how close stars are, etc... here is a little screen shot I took (courtesy of Starry Night Backyard) showing a grid and how close stars are in our "solar neighborhood". FYI (for those who don't know): Rigil Kentaurus is Alpha Centauri in the pic...

Edit: copy and paste the URL into your location bar... tripod's acting up for some reason.

Go to http://www.solstation.com/ for a 3D view (Java applet) of the neighborhood stars (42 lightyears, I think...)

you missed something there.

the particles that make up the nebula starts out travelling at a significant fraction of the the speed of light. now it does start to slow down, and as such, could take years or decades to reach a neighboring system while the radiation fronts will remain at light speed. also, the particles and radiation will spread out as they travel, in the process of travelling outward from capella, they will weaken. the neighboring systems would be in grave danger from both the radiation wave and the shockwave, but each system farther away from cappella would be in less danger. oh, and sol is only 42 lightyaers away from cappella. i would start worrying about the radiation wave. though not the particle wave.

love the idea about the umbrella though, it should work, though its construction would rival the the collossus in many ways. also, its movement would be very difficult, maybe if you made all of the critical componants like the sheild generators and feild emitters removable and just have every system build the structure and particle emiters. it would allow the use of a vastly smaller amount of cargo ships. also, once the operation to shild the planet against the radiation feild is complete, the structure can be converted into orbital installations and forts. or the structure can be kept in place until the time comes to protect the planet from the particle feilds.

Whatcha gotta do is hide a turret all the way out in the middle of nowhere, far the hell away from anything, with a real big long range beam, and put a planet pcx behind it, so it'll fire...

Exclamation

Who knows, the GTVA Map never shows if the other systems are inside the galaxy or in other galaxy, it could be 100 light years or more.

That's true as far as it goes, however the majority of the systems in the nodemap are actual stars in our galaxy.

On a side note, in many of the command ANI's depicting various systems, if you pay attention you can see that as the camera moves around, the spheres representing the systems shift positions in a way that shows that they are rendered in a 3D space and not on a 2D plane. It would be neat to get ahold of the original 3D system layout that :V: used for the game and see if it corresponds to real life stellar positions.

its simple to get one, just look around on the astronomy pages. in fact i think there was a link to one such map in one of the other topics. all of these stars are real places.

They're not in any real orientation to one another, for example Betelgeuse is at least 100 times further away from Sol than Alpha C is, yet it's only a couple of times further away on the nodemap.

In fact one or two of those was close enough and large enough to light the sky at night. (Think of the panic and chaos it created to those unenlightened dark age folks back then )

You are wrong there Dynamo. Actually, Supernovae is a rare phenomenon. Only a few are mentioned in the written history, the most famous is the supernova that exploded around 1024, no sorry, the light from the explosion arrived at that time. When a star explodes, it suddenly becomes brighter than the whole galaxy it belongs.

A supernova did occured in the vicinity of the Solar system, hundreds of thousands of years before, I don't remember the name of the star, but its distance from us was from 50 to 60 lightyears. In an article in a science mag, I have read that the safety distance for a supernova is around 30 lightyears.

Supernova are common in a universe sense, in fact it's been an abberently long time since we there was a supernova in our galaxy.

This is of course on a galactic scale. Supernovas don't happen in our galaxy every few minutes or few days. Its more like hundreds of years.

We're not going to see all of them either and there are of course countless other stars in billions of other galaxys that we're not going to see either.
