If, for example, you have two apples in a bag, and you put another apple in a bag, there will then be three apples in the bag. Why do we call having three of a thing three? I don't know. Maths is all theoretical nonsense anyway.

um no hes right...if you take 1 disaster then put 2 more disasters next to it, you have the nuumber 3 disasters....

1+(1+1)==(1+1+1)

assuming you know what 1 means.

1=1
2=2
3=3

2=1+1
3=1+1+1

then:
2+1=3
