The centauri sentinel and why it sucks ;)

Hiho,

this goes to the Dev team, the sentinel sucks badly as it is atm. The two gun mounts are to far away from the center to effectively hit nearly all small fighters with both gun mounts. You can usually hit him with one ,but the other shot goes mostly astray.

This is a significant disadvantage of the sentinel and it would be really good if you could move the gun mounts a little bit closer to the center.

Blame the Centauri. They're the ones who designed it. Or blame JMS.

It would be cool to be able to adjust the convergence of the guns in our fighters, like in WW2 flight sims. Though that would probably require some serious source code hacking.

I agree phobos, i do not blame em. I do ask the team to change it though, since playability should always come before authenticity in a game.

Either they move the gunmounts closer to the center, or they tilt the guns so the shots race towards each other.

Ok. You've asked. Consider this as the team officially saying no.

dude depends on what is your target. so if you fire at a transport you will hit it ,but if you fire at a Zephir..yo are in trouble..You barrely hit it in a Fury..so why change a model since you are a bad shooter

Indeed, besides it is Sentri. Not Sentry or Sentinel.

That's why the rotating function exists... (keys 7 and 9)

Ahh...I was confused. Guys, try and get the names at least somewhat correct.

I've done tests against every concievable fighter we have currently in the MOD and I've had no problems effectively combating them. I'd suggest re-orienting yourself constantly as you engage an enemy ship. Part of the Sentri's advantages are that its guns are both powerful and fire rapidly. I wouldn't say your doing the same damage per gun as two StarFury cannons but you are doing significant damage.

In the interests of playability, it makes only sense to leave it as is rather than the other way around. Deal with it...not every craft is ever perfect (the multitudes of WWII airplanes, the 1960's jet era, and present day air combat will tell you that no plane or ship is without its problems and disadvantages).

The downside of having the Starfury's guns close together is that if one misses then the other is likely to miss as well. The Sentri has a wider field of effect and therefore can use it's improved manoeuvrability to get into a general firing position before taking a snap shot(s) before turning away. The Starfury needs to line up its target for a short while before taking its shots to make sure of the hits. This means that if the Starfury gets a good tow on the enemy then more damage is inflicted but against a good dogfighter then the Starfury is less reliable.

Every ship has its pros and cons, learn to maximise your strengths and minimise your weaknesses!

That is your choice, i think its a bad one, but your choice nevertheless.

Try the Sentri in the mission i just made. It is practically impossible to hit the frazi with the Sentri. If you are to close , both shots will either miss, or go straight through it without making damage.
If you are a little farther away you have to hope that the frazi not only speeds away from you (wich it usually does) , rather break and expose his length. Even if you shoot at the length, the guns barely hit front and rear of the frazi and some shot mostly go astray.

As for my bad skill, i've played FPS for several years, been in a pretty good clan and all the stuff. I'd say my skill blows out yours easily

Point taken. Dunno what rode me there.

I know that i can "rotate" , yet as i said above, the distance is that great that in dogfight you can only hit a frazi with both guns if it exposes its length and you aim extremely well

That all said i respect the teams decision, although it came only from andrews, but i find it fundamentally flawed.

A game should be optimized for fun, not for the sake of authenticity. The current setting on the sentri is no fun imho.

TBP is damn hard to play anyway.. First I had big problems hitting Nials with the StarFury..Target was small, fast and very maneuvrable...Trust me try the Zephir as target ..possible problem is that u are used to Shooters..well this is not quite a shooter.. Then again Practice.
As far as I am concerned Sentri is very well modeled and done and accurate.(IP knows that I hardly say accurate when come to TBP)

Actually...it came from me, Andrews, Tomcat, and pretty much every other person who has been testing this internally (ie. the team).

A game SHOULD be optimized for fun and not for the sake of authenticity. That is exactly my moto and that is why you don't die in one shot...that is why the cannons can be fired in long bursts rather than extremely short ones, that is why its possible to survive an entire mission without being wiped out by a capital ship that has guns that move so fast that you have no chance to evade.

These things I have been sensitive to and these things I have balanced. I do not agree with your asssement that the Sentri is in-effective or that the Frazi is hard to hit. If anything, the Frazi may be a few meters too small (depending on your analysis of the scales present in the show), however, at no time have I found it difficult to properly nail a Frazi or seven to the wall when need be.

if you have seen the sentri it is also a difficult target to hit. it has a small thin profile and is extremely manuverable. Use that to your advantage against the frazi. you can out fly it with out a probem.

Posted by Kosh_Naranek on 05-28-2003 04:11 PM:

In my opinion the Sentri is very good. It's just the style of the Centauri fast, agile and deadly guns. I would say on an scale 1 to 10 it would got a 9. But now my question to the Dev's. Would it be possible to make the Nial carry 3 Main guns. So that the firing effect from the Show is better to see. If not, no problem. But it would be fine.

Kosh_Naranek: Nial is as good as it can be without source code modifications. Use tbp_open if you want it to have real beams which also cycles as in the show.

Much later, tbp_open will be supported officially. By then it is most likely also required.

the sentri is also a fast powerful and manueverable craft. they could be easily used as a multi role craft. a wing of sentris could easily take out a q'guan.

You've got to understand that it takes skill to fly the sentri and aim aswell.Once you know where to aim,you can take them out like flies.

It's kinda like flying a Bwing or Xwing after you've gotten used to the cannons on the Awing.
Just aim slightly to the side of the crosshair.
