Space Sim "silver medal"

After I was done with freeSpace2, I decided to look after some other space sim to play. I tried "tachyon" and didn't like it, the sound effects were too ugly and I didn't feel any inclination to play; now I'm playing Starlancer (I had high expectations for this one, being a wing commander vet and all), but, despite being so far the best in a "freespace-less" environment, still it's not very good considering the high standards volition set.

So far, the only simulation games I've seen that I can enjoy after freespace are the Mech Warrior series, but still I have a thing for space ships (I became addicted after WC II), and I want something of THAT kind.

So, as i'm not very aware of what's new in game industry, I figured this would be a good place to ask... what is the second best space-sim avaiable now? The one that would be your favourite should freespace not exist?

Regards .

You could give Freelancer a try. The demo's on FilePlanet's main page.

I liked Freelancer (demo) when I played it, it was different with the controls of the ship and all, but it felt a bit aracade-ish with using a mouse, and the gameplay.
For me Freespace has always been the best.

I-War 2. Absolutely. This is the most beautiful and the most realistic space sim that I have ever seen (it is a sim - you have to deal with heat levels, power levels and electronic emission levels for you sneak fans). It's got real Newtonial physics too and the scale is just unbelieveable (you really do have to travel millions of kilometres with a quasi-warp drive to get to another space station)
The ships do seem a bit small, but it is a really fun game.

There is also a project to put the B5 ships into I-War 2 as well as FS2 (the two projects are completely unrelated as far as I know), but it is not quite up to the quality of the FS2 Babylon Project - there is no Earth-Minbari War campaign, for one thing.
However, you can fly the Whitestar (with real beams!).

Descent 3 is fun, too...

It's old as hell, but has by far the best storyline since Freespace 2: TIE Figther.

tie fighter rocked, so did XVT, and XWA. But if we are going there, we'd may as well go back to our humble origins.....X wing. 1/2 kb graphics....or at least it looked that bad.......but a blast to play.

Hmmm ... FreeSpace 2 is definitely the sh!t, makes me wish they did an expansion to it.

however, I am happy to see that there are other people like me and remember TIE Fighter/X-Wing. TIE Fighter (and its two expansions) is still the reigning champion in my books (FS2 a close second though) ... I HIGHLY recommend TIE Fighter Collector's CD-ROM if you can find it. Still works great, now if only my joystick didn't break a while back ...

Freelancer, btw ... NOT a flight sim. It's hella fun, and I blew most of last night playing it ... good graphics but I get the feeling this thing is gonna be short. TIE Fighter ... well, I musta played through it 30-40 times (all 12 campaigns) ... I wish they'd re-make that. And do WELL remaking it (unlike recent sequels such as Master of Orion 3).

I have Decent: Freespace The Great War and it kicks ass!

But yes, I remeber X-Wing back in the day... I always remeber going kamikaze since it had a pretty "realistic" type of collission. Too bad I didn't have a joystick back then, so I missed out on alot of fun...
