-- Capship weapons (http://volitionwatch.papageorgefamily/vwbb/showthread.php?threadid=7706)
Capship weapons
Has anyone else noticed that new models seem to have fewer defensive weapons than Volition's do? I noticed that most ships I downloaded had no rear firing turrets, and some didn't have dedicated foreward turrets either.
Although such ships make excellent 'strike' vessels, I would like to see more ships with aft firing heavy beams.
Am I alone on this matter?

Most ships I've seen go overkill on the weaponry and especially on the power of the weaponry in comparison to FS2 standard vessels.

Mods...overkill in terms of weaponry on capitalships is common both in the number of weapons as well as the strength of said weapons. Now, Into the Night will use a number of very specialized cruisers, from strike carriers and blockade runners to artillery cruisers and well rounded gun platforms.
The corvettes will likewise be rather specialized for the most part, although there will only be a couple of new corvette classes. The same trend will apply for destroyers and small combat craft, every ship in every fleet has its own special role; overkill will not be an issue on the player side; shivans on the other hand... heh

With the turret positioning of V's ships, its very difficult to select the right kind of weapon to a turret to pack a strong offensive and/or defensive punch. The ships I've tested with FRED to have excellent turrent positioning (and weapon mix) is the Fenris/Leviathan and the Deimos. The superior ships that I would rate would be the Aeolus and the Sobek.
I mean, in space, if one thinks about it, its illogical to have a ship shaped like something traveling through an atmosphere. Even though in an atmosphere, the threat is three dimensional, in space, the threat can be EVERYWHERE. The best close defensive and unlimited range offensive shape is obviously sphere. The best long range defensive shap is a thin body (like a stick, although impossible to build and manage).
With the introduction (or by now the presence) of beam weapons, many MODers tend to overly supply a ship with beam weapons (I mean, even an Orion will have a tought time dealing with all LRBGreens, not to mention a Deimos or Aeolus). And where are the self defense weapons for these ships with all beams?
Best solution? Escorts, fighters, and other capital ships. (But with that, you'll have to deal with the layout of the battle group, which is much more harder to discuss and handle due to the 3D environment.)

Indeed Star Destroyer has quite strategic desing. It can easily bring most of its fire power to fight on any side.
But as most vulnerable from rear. Super Star Destroyer fixes that problem also: defended heavily from every side.

Take the Orion. Its best offensive punch is to each side, but it has a weak head-on defense, in which it must expose its side, in which it can take more damage. Same with the Colossus.
I think the best offensivly and defensivly capable ship is the Deimos. 4 front turrets, 4 side turrets plus a missile launcher each side, 3 on top, and most important, the weaker parts of other ships, 2 AAAs on the bottom, and 2 main beams on the rear, plus another 2 shared shared with the side. The Sobek is somewhat strong, but its main weakness is its underside, with only 2 laser turrets in the front and 4 semi-capable turrets shared in the middle.
[EDIT] As for the Star Destroyer, or any other ship for that matter, you gotta take into consideration the size of the ship that's capable of being equipped with these weapons. [/EDIT]
I wonder if there should be a tactical/strategical planner here
