Of topic: new 3D card

I just got myself a G-force 4 Ti-4200 mounted on my T-bird 1200.
My model is from MSI (#8870) Ti-4200 with 64MB for 214 Euros (ouch!!! ) wich is the cheapest I could find.
Clock settings are: 513MHz for memory, 250Mhz for core.
My games run without blinking, curiously I think FS2 was the least benefited from this card, the shear number of ships in a test mission still doesnt let my PC go above 60FPS with all detail maxed out, detail apears to have a negligible efect on game fluidity.

From what I could see from this card I can confirm a few things:
-It runs 5-6 times faster than my older card (G-force 256 SDR) on first person shooters (simulation is another matter)
-Brutal difference in Anti-aliasing perfomance I'd say 15% perfomance loss compared to the 50% or more on previous cards ( 256 series and 2 GTS), that in 4x mode
-This card really doesnt give a s**t about incresing res, almost as fast on the next level of res as the one before.
-Same for 16-32 bit colour change.
-In flight simulations I noticed the CPU is now the Bottleneck, when I got dozens of fighters on screen I get the same FPS, no matter what detail I have (still above 30FPS)

I would like to ask you guys a few questions:
-Those who have similar models to mine wich is the respective clock speeds?
-I got my system running at 34º celsius of ambient temperature (inside the case, outside it is about 25º), My CPU up to 58º
is this normal?
-3dmark scores 7021 points (first driver setup got me to 6500 only) I want to know if this what can I expect.

I would expect that score to be a little higher that that. I'm running a 1ghz @1.1 tbird w/ 512mb sdram, and a GF3 ti200 and score 6053 on 3dmark. And 58c on the cpu seems too hot to me. I keep mine around 37c.

hi my cpu runs at 53c i know 58 is considered "hot" but i think it is acceptable. i once read about someone whos cpu was running at 75c, a t-bird, said it probably wasnt damaging it ! but to cool it down to safer levels.

i've never seen my cpu temp indicator about 53c

i only get 5300 in 3dmark though i think it probably depends on what settings you use on it though, i put all settings to max at 1024 res...

7935 with everything on minimum !

at one point i saw a fps of 182 lol never below 45 on the game type demos

o my system is athlon 1800 512ddr and gf3ti200

I run my Athlon XP 1900+ at 55 - 58°C while idle and 66 - 70°C at full load. However that's because I'm using one those Zalman flower cooler HSF's (they're really quiet ). Although my brother is somehow gettting 50°C at idle and 60°C with full load on an XP 1600+ with exactly the same HSF.

Only difference between me and him is that he's got a full tower case and I've got a desktop case.

Anyway Athlon XP's are rated to go up to 90°C before they burn. However I don't think you'd probably want to run the CPU that high

Athlons run as much as 20 degrees C hotter than the equivalent Intel models. My PIII 733 runs at about 26-34c normally and im not quite sure of the higher temp when its really crunching numbers but as long as you're not in the 70c range, you should be just fine.

Hehe... My friends computer temperature was constantly about 80-90c Damn it was hot -- Can you imagine ; 7 people in a small room having LAN-party and that darn computer raising the room temperature It might of been good for cooking eggs on it.

Before I got the new card on , my system would rarely go anywhere above 55º anbient temp was less than 28º inside.
The design of the G4 cooler throws hot air in to the aspiration cone of my radial CPU cooler (Super ORB) wich keeps the air inside the case always above 30º.
Ranger 1, your machine is not much different from mine, you must got a monster cooler or better air circulation.
I got 3d mark 2001 to 7100 pints with 1024x768 at 16 bits at 32 bits hits around 6950.

But another question has risen: How the hell can I get opengl apps run at higher refresh rates above 60Hz???
Win XP doesnt let me change that, there is no reference to any change option!

You need a tool to change your refresh rates. It's one of those bugs that's not really been fixed by M$ on either 2K or XP.

Here's the refresh rate tool I use.

Works fine for the 27.42 drivers. Not sure if it'll work with earlier/later driver versions although it should...

IceFire: Not true anymore...once P4s reached a certain clockspeed under Williamette and especially once the Northwood core came out, they're generating just as much heat as the Athlon lines theses days.

Oh and this really belongs in general discussion, so off it goes! I'll be nice and leave you a redirect, though.

Oh and those Zalman coolers might be quiet, but so is my Alpha PAL8045 with a 80->92 fan adaptor and a 92mm Panaflo L1A stuck on it. Under load, it's rarely if ever above 44C or something nice and cool like that

I do have very good cooling. I have the Lian Li pc70 case which has 2 80mm fans sucking air in the front and 2 80mm fans blowing air out the back and I have a 80mm fan on a ocz goliath heatsink.

About the refresh rate. Do you have the refresh rate fix for your card which I assume is a nvidia? Also some monitor's refresh rate are limited by the resolution. eg. I can run at 75hz @ 1024x768 but only 60hz @ 1280x1024.

Bah!

Well the next time I upgrade I'll look into that fan.

Just how physically big is that complete assembly? Reckon I'd get a pair of them onto this puppy?

(Bear in mind this is just me dreaming until I find both a local supplier for this mobo and the 2-3000 Aussie dollars required to option it up how I want it...)

I have found a fix for winxp refresh rate problem and it works with every Card/driver setup. It also lets you choose whatever refresh frequency you like.

http://www.geforcezone.com/tweaks.htm

Is the cooler on G-force 4 cards glued to the chip?
I ask because theres a Thermaltake cooler for it in sales.

My Spec

Hi,

My Spec is as follows:

ASUS A7V333 1.07 BIOS
AMD Athlon XP 1600+
512MB DDR PC2100
GeForce 2 MX-400 32MB (Running Drivers Version: 30.82)

800x600x32, i get 4300ish.

1024x768x32, i get 3700ish.

Not bad for a ****ty Video Card.

I am gonna get a MSI GF4 Ti4200 64MB DDR next month

Admiral LSD: Alpha's got a compatibility list somewhere on their site, but I can tell you my first guess is "not ... gonna ... happen." This thing is a MASSIVE heatsink, and with the fan it's even bigger. I've also read reports of them just not fitting, period, on dualie boards. It has trouble fitting on a lot of single-CPU boards (although most new ones fit it fine, like Alpha's site has a warning about my 8KHA+ (the possibility of hitting a cap or something) but when I installed it there were no troubles at all)

A possible alternative might be the Thermal(right/take/someone) AX-7. I hear it's quite good, and a bit better at fitting onto boards, including dualies. Ars Technica's Case and Cooling Fetish forum would know for sure, because that's where I picked up all this

Yep, they are beta drivers and these are faster then 29.42

800x600x32 on 3DMark2001 using v29.42 = 50fps or so

800x600x32 on 3DMark2001 using v30.82 = 60-70fps or so

So, when i get my GF4 Card, i am gonna use these drivers.
