Need Upgrade Advice

Hi,

i am planning a MAJOR upgrade for my computer since my current one is screwed up. lol

i currently have:

ASUS A7M266
AMD Athlon 1.2Ghz
256MB DDR PC2100
GeForce 2 MX-400

I have to play Freespace 2 @1024x768 in 16bit mode.
or
I have to play FreeSpace 2 @ 640x480 in 32bit mode.

otherwise, it would be too slow. :'(

It has to be the motherboard, my sister has the same board, so i am getting a whole new computer basicly.

i plan to get:

ASUS A7V333
AMD Athlon XP 1800+
512MB DDR PC2100 (extra 256MB)
Creative GF4 Ti4400

that SHOULD run FS2 with no problems at all, my current setup shouldn't, but it does.

is it important to have a major GF4 Ti Card like Creative or ASUS? or can i have MSI or ABIT or something?????

I really need to know as soon as possible because i am going to start buying each component at a time.

Let me know,
JamieK

There's something wrong with your computer if it can't run FS2 at max detail levels. Very wrong. Consider FS2 ran great on an AMD K6/2 400MHz with a Voodoo2...

Anyway. As for card manufacturers, if you're getting an Asus motherboard, I reccomend an Asus video card - for two reasons.
One, Asus + Asus == usually works
Two, Asus cards are pretty good -- quality-wise and performance-wise.

Don't get an Abit card with an Asus board, that's just asking for trouble. I had an Abit board and an Asus card, and it was hell.

However, my preferred video card vendor is by far Gainward. I love Gainward's cards, they rule.

Other great brands include Visiontek and Leadtek, I don't know much about Creative or MSI cards, but I vaguely recall hearing MSI would be a bad idea, but that was in the early GF3 stages...they may have improved.

well, normally, i would get an ASUS Card, but they are expensive.

i did see a £170 GF4, but that is most probably a MX one.

A sort-of related question... I am in the process of building a new system as well. Don't have the mobo yet (I'll probably go w/ an Athlon XP 1800 or so), but I have a VisionTek GeForce 3/Ti200 and Creative Audigy Gamer soundcard that I will use in the system.

As I'm pretty much a Windows idiot, I was wondering what the best Windows OS for gameplaying is. I have heard horror stories about WinXP, but then again I've heard some people who love it...

Is it still possible to get older WIndows OSes? I think I still have the Win98 CD somewhere, so that would work, but could I still get WinME or whatever if that's the consensus?

thx
=p=

This is totally a 'you get what you pay for' situation. Save up the money and buy the better ASUS cards. Quality of the board is important I've found to keeping a stable system. Its not just drivers....its the hardware and how well it was put together.

Well, i have magicly been able to get my parents to help me out.

i have calculated that i will be short by £65 or so to get my Video Card.

I have decided to get the following Hardware:

ASUS A7V333
AMD Athlon XP 1600+
256MB DDR PC2100 (512MB in Total)
128Mb ASUS V8440 Ge-Force 4 DVi

Will this be fast enough to run all the games that are out now???

and i mean Soldiers of Fortune 2, GTA3 and all the other games.

radeon ANYTHING... save yourself the hell. go with a GF3/4.

Ideal system:

MSI K7N420 Pro (nForce board)
-512 M 2700 DDR ram (kingston or micron)
AMD AthlonXP 2100+
Dual Maxtor UDMA/100 7200 rpm 40 Gig HDDs
Creative SB Live! (or audigy sound system)
MSI / ABit / Asus GF4 TI 4400 OR MX 440

and a nice monitor. that box will hold you over for another 2 years plus.
