The Aurora Starfury

I was playing the Babylon Project demo recently and I am impressed by the gameplay and models. Not to mention the story of the Earth-Minbari War. I have read about that war but never got to see it on TV. Sometimes, it is better to see it than read it.

Anyway, the Minbari fighters are so damn fast and manuverable like the SF Dragons. However, the one thing that bug me the most was the manuevarability of the Starfury itself. I could not properly get the Minbari fighters in my targeting recticle because the Starfury was always moving about too fast. I tried setting the sensitivity down but it did not really help.

Practice is the key, my friend... Practice is the key...

(Hey... try to finish demo campaign in "insane" difficulty, I managed to complete all other missions except second convoy escort mission, damn it's HARD! )

Its not how manuverable the Aurora is, but how much dampening it has. The Aurora is actually less manuverable than a FS1/FS2 Ulysses.

So, what makes it a little more difficult is the manuver dampening. We tried for a bit of a more realistic touch to things, so you have to accelerate upto full turn speed and then decelerate out of it. Its very slight, but it takes a bit of getting used to

I'll say. It took me to days to get acustumed to the new feel then I spent two months playing noraml FS2 and the Derelict campaign , now I have to get re-accustumed to the TBP feel and still stay in the FS2 mode. Yeeshh!

I didn't really notice any real difference... Then again, I'm a space-sim freak so I pretty much feel comfortable in any starship known to man.
Only I-war takes little practicing. But I think that goes without saying, doesn't it? (I remember when I tried to play Warhead the firstime. Whew.... )

I, also, am a space sim freak. With two small differences;

I think quite clearly in newtonian, and seldom use the assist in I-war.

I also think quite clearly in true 3d, and only rarely do I get lost in Descent, even without autolevel.

that's said, I can't understand how someone could play Descent with autolevel... you're trying to target something and blam, the stupid thing puts you back to horizontal... huh

Sounds like three dimensional thinking to me. If you ever work(ed) with relational databases, you'll probably figure them out pretty quickly.

Yeah, I have no troubles with Descent. Autoleveling is evil.
As for TBP ships vs FS2 ships ... It took me maybe 15 minutes to learn how to handle the Aurora, and after that, it was Nial blasting fun time.

Yeah you should. Insane, man, insane!

I mean, I was comfortable with the Aurora's flight style immediately, it just took me a few tries to learn how to hit those stupid Nials

I prefer the mouse, much more accurate although i was forced to use my Saitek Joystick with Iwar2 so i have developed skillz with it. Thats one of the reasons FS2 is so cool, it lets you use the mouse

I didn't notice any difference in the handling really... felt like any other FS2 ship to me

and I am playing IW2 right now also. pretty easy to switch back and forth

I like the aurora's handling.. I like the way it corners much better than the FS2 ships.
And how can anyone not use a joystick?

I have the Force feedback version of that stick (for all efects of controlability is the same) , and let me tell you a secret, assigning rool to stick twist will allow you a hole new universe of evasive manuevers. Try this:

A wing of nials is heading head to head for you, as soon they have you in range they will fire those dreaded neutron guns at ya, apply pitch with a flavour of twist, youll start flying in spiral strait for them... BUT THEY MISS EVERY TIME!!
They aim at you based in a prediction that if you fly at a constant linear speed your position is predictable in the future, so they fire at that predicted point. If you fly in spiral theres no longer pure linear movement, so loft aiming wont work.
Wats great: you can shoot at them while they miss you all the time. You have to find the optimum roll rate, after that...pff they're smoke.

Its great as well if you find you cant face an overwelming number of nials, do this manuever while running away from them towards an alied capital ship, be carefull if your to far away from it those nials will reach you first.
Besides we see fighters roll a lot in the series too

Without twist I think you have a short sighted freedom.
also if you find hard to control the ship with yor stick try variating the deadzone and range of of stick freedom it helps a lot.

Playing with a mouse??? with a keyboard??? try flying against a human pilot acustumed to these kind of sticks and your dead in less than 10 seconds.

Yeah and try playing it with the Force Feedback on full.

Funny.......I'm still not used to the new dampening thingy. I keep overshooting those damn Nials.
