XProblems
Alright I know that this probably isn't the best place to ask about all my OS problems, however you people are about the only people I know that have any decent idea about the system and aren't corparatly affiliated so here goes.
I got Windows XP for christmas(finally) and most of my hardware works fine except my CD-RW and my DVD-rom. MY CD-RW has always been a faithful tool and I would hate to have to replace it now. However The software that came with my computer is not compatible with the XP version of the drivers for it and therefore doesn't read the drive. Also whe I try to follow XP's instructions on how to burn a CD it gives me a message when ever I have a new cd in that reads:"D: not available, invalid function." This of course means that it wont let me burn Cd's and all my old cds are not working(including the ones that I saved TBP to). It still seems to read store bought cd's alright and when I instert one of my backup cds and look at the properties it says the size of the stuff on the disk but it still gives me that damned message.
Now for the DVD player:
The DVD-rom that I have is an old Creative Labs Encore 2x DVD-Rom with a DXr2 decoder card. It is slow but effective and when I upgraded to XP it stopped operating because of some drivers that Xp overwrote. I tried to reinstall the drivers but the disk says that it will only run on Windows 95( an outright lie because I know for a fact that it still worked under 98 SE). I checked the Creative website but there are no Xp drivers or software for the Decoder(where I believe the problem is)
If you have any info or ideas on either subject please post or email me.

I'd search the Ars Technica Open Forum (find it at arstechnica.com) because I remember seeing a problem like yours in XP before. Try the NT/2000 Mojo forum; search before posting, and you'll probably find it.)

I have a bad feeling about this... you did upgrade install right?
NEVER do upgrade install, always do clean installs.
Upgrade install always leaves some bad **** behind from older OS.
Also, I don't know what burner you have but there should be update available for burner software.
DVD drives have native support in WinXP, try installing proper Windows XP Pdrivers, not 9x drivers.
I don't know what to do about mpeg decoder, if XP does not have drivers for it, then you need to take it out and wait for XP drivers. But Windows 2000 drivers should work too, try 'em out, if there's no W2k drivers... then bad luck, seems like creative has forgotten that product then.
Edit: Anyways, I'm happy with my WinXP, I won't switch back to ****ty W98.

Wow Kazan, that wasn't a full Microsoft bash....that was more of a half a bash! We are making improvement! Maybe you'll be able to say nice things about something someday
(not expecting anything nice about MS from you, but hey...what can I do).
Reformat. Thats the plan for me. I JUST got XP today, backing up everything to CD, at the moment.
Sooner or later they had to make the jump to a proper OS without all of the legacy support that Win95 has and every other Win9.x system had after that. So its creating some havok at the moment. In a year, most people will be thankful that XP came around because it is alot better than any other WinOS so far (although Win2000 is pretty good in its own right).
Growing pains...thats all.

I'm sorry, but I'm with Kazan on the XP-Haters Committee. If what I've read hasn't changed, isn't heXP locked to your computer with some wonky registration system when installed and you can't install it on any other machine afterwards? You see, I am a poor person, and lack the funds to buy an individual copy of an operating system for all four computers in my home (tallies up to about $800 just for the OS that way). That'd really hurt a big corporation that has hundreds of computers needing upgrades, and they may not have the thousands of dollars needed to buy a separate OS for everything they own. Provided the installation lock is still there, of course. (I'm wagering money that it is.)

cry cry cry. You can't pirate your OS like you're used to; it's never been enforced, and now the fine print is being enforced.
Welcome to Microsoft's anti-piracy attempt. Futile? Probably (can we say XP Corporate...yes we can, Corporate has no WPA)
And corporations, as a rule, do not pirate their OSes because they will get stomped on harshly for it. The home user is a different story. (Also licenses for X copies of Windows XP don't cost $100 each for Home, $200 each for Pro...volume discounting
)
However. It's lightyears ahead of any other MS operating system ever, this thing is as big or bigger than the DOS->Windows 95 switch was. Why?
Finally ... NT core!
And this update patch (which you should go get NOW) is available at http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com (there's a redirect at windowsupdate.com as well) ... as are several other things that you probably want.
Now...if we're going to sit here and take potshots at XP, I'd prefer to see facts. Because as it stands, none of you have any . . . or at least haven't posted any.
Oh and Kazan, your last post was hilarious. Ever think that Microsoft has a monopoly for a reason?
(Although, when I saw XProblems, I thought of X-windows too. That's kinda funny.)

Well after two days of working with Xp I have become a firm believer in its capabilities. All of the conflicts except for the DVD have been reparied and I am now running with only the problem of having to find the cash to by Roxio or figure a way around the trial thingy. EVerthing else awas fixed with a 1 1/2 hour download from windows update.
P.S. I did do the upgrade and it works just fine after a few updates.
P.P.S. Anyone who says XP is a waste f money should come up here where the average temp is about 8 degrees and take a long walk off of a very, very short pier.
P.P.P.S. Thanks for the help.
