Noticed something interesting in ItB

Curse Amazon.com.....I managed to snag a rip of the ItB dvd before my actual dvd arrived! Anyway, I noticed in the disastrous first contact between the Humans and Minbari that one of the Hyperions was the Hyperion itself. It's the ship that gets its observation deck blown off after the Minbari cruisers start firing back. I guess the Minbari fleet didn't manage to follow them back to their base and kill them all. So not only did the gunnery officer come to B5 years later thinking he was King Arthur, but it seems that one of the ships from the first contact came back to try and secure Epsilon 3 when they discovered the Great Machine as well. Oh well, just felt like saying that all.

Yup, I heard JMS say that using the Hyperion in that scene was intentional and not an effects flop. I'll try and find his actual quote on the Lurker's Guide if I can.

BTW if its name was hyperion, it means that it was the first ship of its class. Hard to believe that it had survived the Minbari war and was still in active duty?

Hmm....too bad you can't see the nameplate on the Hyperion that is at the B5 decommissioning ceremony...I wonder...

Posted by Triggy on 12-09-2001 03:18 PM:

Names are often reused in ships, several examples being seen in the show itself. It is not a new thing for sci-fi nor for real life.

Also, my current campaign depends on not all of the ships in that EA fleet being killed (although they may have been tracked). Anyway, the novelisation says that Jankowski survives only to later kill himself once he realises the enormity of what he has done.

Hyperion doesn't have to be the first of its class. The first of the Nimitz class aircraft carriers in the US Navy was USS Enterprise, followed by the USS Nimitz.

In a revist of the Earth Minbari war, would everyone want to revisit the first contact with the Minbari?

That's strange, I keep noticing wierd things today... I just realized that another of the ships leaving B5 in Sleeping in Light was an Olympus corvette too. The EA sure gave didn't seem too interested in having an overwhelming presence at that ceremony.

A Heavy Cruiser and a Corvette is not a bad presence.

Well... it's a miracle that those ships are even in service then!

Ice, Enterprice isn't Nimitz class, it's a modified Forrestal. Nimitz is first in its class.

you sure???????????? i was certain the enterprise was a nimitz class

Yes, I'm very sure. Just look at the launching dates, they are more than 10 years apart. And compare the 'Islands' (the structure on the deck), they look very different. 'Jane's all the worlds fighting ships' says that they are different classes (I've got the books right here). The sizes aren't the same either. They say that the Enterprise is the only one in its class., and that it is actually a modified Forrestal (it's nuclear, and the Forrestal isn't, it's also a bit longer than a Forrestal).

Starkiller's right, I've never heard of a class not being led off with a ship of the same name.

And new ship names do happen, for example, there have been 13 vessels with the name USS Maine, I think, but I don't think they've ever been the same class - that part I'm fuzzy on. Still, it's within the realm of possibility.

Yep, there can be 2 ships with the same name, but they can't be the same class. And the can't be in use at the same time.

Posted by Alphakiller on 12-10-2001 07:40 AM:

Clarification: Class means specific class, not general ship type . . . and I'm not sure on that 'same class' point. For example, I know several of the USS Maines were battleships, but they weren't the exact same model of battleship - one was a South Dakota class, if I remember right, another one was the Maine class...
just in case that was confusing, I made it moreso! Power to me!

Then again, applying USN standards to the EA is a bit ... um ... wrong, since the EA would most likely amalgamate the standards of major Earth navies for its fleet...not just one.

Whatever. I'm off to go start another stupid "Victory vs Sharlin vs Imperial Star Destroyer vs VGER satellite vs that ship from SAAB vs some stupid fanboy 4068609-km long Deathstation 2000 Deluxe vs Rover the dog" thread.

Rover the dog would win outright - in order to get the show into a primetime slot, WB have to make it more "family friendly". Therefore the dog can't die.

I'll defer to you since you've got the book and I'm just going by memory.

You're sure its not nuclear? The Enterprise was in a magazine saying it was part of the "nuclear force" which inplied that it was nuclear.

So the Hyperion could be the first of its class. Built after the Dilgar war anyways. And I guess it could have survived the whole conflict. Its possible.

Stupid me...... Off course Enterprise is Nuclear, I meant Forrestal isn't nuclear...
Enterprise was 2nd nuclear powered surface ship in US Navy (I think in the world also).
