The wonder of planets...

Originally The Babel Effect was to feature only new planet backdrop bitmaps. However new high-resolution planet models will be found in some missions, and overall they're seamless with the standard bitmaps except more depth and detail for those special missions (Even Venom was amazed from this little sample)

Note: This is *not* the same type of planet as in The B5 TC, this is an actual sphere as opposed to a flat plane with tiled bitmaps.

Looks awesome Ace. I'll assume that smoothing will be on

No, I like jagged edges and ugly polygons

Kidding aside, the various planets also have a very slight rotation to them, and it very much helps the ringed planet effects...

Very nice, but where did you get the texture from?

I've been looking for some.

A 32 kilometer planet? Pretty small.

The actual model will be resized soon, with smoothing added

This planet is a few simple fill functions with cloud maps done in Lunarcell with shadow effects added for more depth.

More detail will be on the actual planets getting used. Lunarcell though is good for perliminary texture effects, but a lot of touchup/layers are needed before you get a photorealistic planet.

BTW, if anyone knows where to find any high-res Earth maps which can be tweaked with cloud and shadow layers, please send over some links. (I've done some searches to no avail)

You could probably pull some satelite generated clouds from Lunar Cell and apply them separately.

How big are the planets going to be. I'm willing to bet they weren't all that huge in StarLancer, but at the right size anything will work.

The final size right now planned should be about to real scale, however the 32km versions are easier to work with and in testing no difference can really be seen between the two. (though it's a fraction of the real size, it doesn't scale much differently when you "fly close" to it, and it can have the sensor info turned off so that players don't realize how small it is)

Currently I am using the realclouds option with shadows added since it gives a very nice effect.

Is the planet able to be bombarded?

Posted by Ace on 12-02-2001 08:04 PM:

Yup, and debris maps can be used to give the "burning world" look.

Don't forget to give the planets a real big shockwave when they blow up.

What, you planning on blowing one up with a Subach?

How about an ML-16

Put enough juice behind an ML-16 and you can do anything

Nah, I was actually thinking about..... uh...... using the conversion matrix on one.
