| Interview with Matt Kresge |
 |
Recently, I got in touch with Volition and THQ to see if they would release Matt Kresge from... wherever it is they keep him, so I could ask him some questions. They reluctantly agreed, and you can all see why they were reluctant below.
Tell a bit about yourself. Who you are, what you like to do in your free time, things like that.
Matt Kresge is a human who works for Volition, Inc. Matt likes to Ski, watch anime, and look at small animals.
What exactly is it that you do at Volition?
Matt creates all the minor characters for Summoner. Matt likes village people and gargoyles. A lot.
How did you come to be at Volition? There wasn't any espionage, was there? Some espionage would have been cool...
Matt doesn't believe in espionage. Espionage is bad. Matt is good. Matt went to Virginia Commonwealth University where he learned how to make pretty pictures. Matt applied to Volition. Volition liked Matt and Matt liked Volition.
Do you often dress up as pirates, or was that just for the camera?
Matt only dresses up when he wants to hide. Matt likes his pirate hat and gold tooth.
Is there going to be any pirates in Summoner?
Matt likes pirates. Summoner likes pirates. Pirates are good. |

This is Matt "hiding". |
Do you worry a lot?
Matt only worries when he is awake. When Matt is asleep, Matt doesn't worry. Sleep is good.
Might as well start a tradition: Halo or Tribes 2?
Matt likes Tribes. Tribes 2 is good. Matt worries that Halo is all hype.
I like dragons... and I just heard there was going to be Dragons in the game. Did you have any involvement in designing them? Are they cool!?
Dragons scare Matt. Matt only designs cute and nice things. Peter Han likes Dragons. Pete will design good dragons for Summoner.
You're about to design a character, what's the first thing you do?
First Matt calls forth the souls of the dead. Then Matt thinks happy thoughts. Once Matt is super happy, Matt makes a 3D model. Then Matt makes the model have a nice texture. Texture is good.
Obviously character design is an important part of an RPG. What sort of things did you do to ensure people would get the correct impression of each creature's/person's purpose?
Matt likes things that are different from Matt. Matt tries to make characters pretty and different from other RPG's.

This is one of Matt's recently released concept pieces, The Bone Knight. |
What would you say is your favorite (or the coolest) character/creature you've created so far?
Matt really likes the Bone Knight character. Matt also likes the Iron Golem. A lot.
|
What is the magical tool in your drawing arsenal? If you don't have a "magical" tool, what is your secret weapon?
Matt likes his magic 9MM Beretta. Matt doesn't like it when people step to him. When Matt doesn't have to cap people, Matt uses Photoshop. Photoshop is good.
I, once again, asked for some reader submitted questions and allowed Matt to do whatever he pleased with him. I'm pretty sure what he did was legal.
Do you get inspiration for conceptual art from any specific place? Or does it just come to you like insanity comes to WildWolf?
Matt gets lots of inspiration from anime. Matt really likes Escaflowne, Gundam, Five Star Stories, and many other good things. Matt likes pretty things by Jim Lee, Mamorou Nagano, Yoshitaka Amano, Frank Frezetta, and other good people.
Colored pencil or crayon?
Matt likes Crayon. Matt doesn't like how colored pencils taste.
Boxers or briefs?
Matt doesn't believe in underwear. Matt doesn't believe in many things like taxes and bathing.
Matt, Do you talk like the grammar on your bio at volition-inc.com? [ed. note: Matt's bio on the Volition homepage is entirely in the third person, for those who don't know.]
Matt doesn't talk. Matt uses telepathy to communicate with other humans. Matt likes to bend spoons.
Do you ever consider bumping off Josh Nizzi so you can get his paycheck, too?
Matt considers many things, but Anoop always makes sure Matt stays in line. Matt likes to stand in line.
Be honest, When was the last time you got schooled in pool by Kulas?
Matt goes to school a lot. Matt's friends at work often take turns as the bus driver and take Matt to school. Matt doesn't like school.
Do you agree with Dave Baranec's statement that programmers are the laziest humans on the earth?
Matt knows programmers aren't real humans. Matt sees through their magic disguise. Matt waits patiently for the right moment to expose them.
C'mon, tell us the office gossip. Are there any secret plans to take over the world by addicting us to cool artwork?
Matt sometimes sells artwork to kids on the corner to make a little money. Matt uses a different name when hes sells artwork so the police can't find him.
Did you know there's a famous artist named Velazquez? Does this bother Jiovanie?
Jio is Matt's arch-nemesis. Matt likes to bother Jio. Matt thanks you for giving him more things to make fun of Jio with.
What about Jasen? He's at the end of the bio page. Did you know he looks kinda like my cousin?
Matt tries to avoid eye contact with Jasen. Matt fears Jasen and your cousin. Matt fears many things. Matt is going back inside now.
I'd like to thank Matt for taking the time out to answer these questions. I'd like to punish Volition for letting Matt out of his office.
