It was Khazad Dum (probably where JMS got the name from), with several other Dwarf locations being *something* Dum.
Also, there was the Elven settlement of Lothlorien (also called just Lorien). Now, where have I heard that one before?
How about the great Enemy casting everything in Shadow?
Dark servents of the great Enemy? (or am I going too far now?)
It's a pity they don't have any Vorlons in LotR

Yep, the dwarves dug too deep in Moria, and awakened "fire and shadow".
Also gandalf falls to the gap of kha'zad'dum, dies, and comes back alive.

Same here. I need a Psi-Cop now to erase that bit of memory so I'll be surprised.

I can't believe you guys are even trying to do this.
Get a very simple fact through all of your heads. Every single piece of fiction blatantly rips from every other piece of fiction and its not nearly as intentional as some of you think it is. Lord of the Rings is an incredibly simple good vs evil tale. It has all of the imagery in place, the light, the dark, its all there. The important thing that sets it apart and makes it good as a piece of fiction is in the details, the execution, and the thread that the story follows.
The very same can be said about Babylon 5. The reason we like it is because its done in such a way that appeals to our sense of entertainment and story. Names and imagery is what brings it alive sure, but if we are going to go and point fingers at every piece of fiction that uses say dark and light imagery or similar or like names, then you might as well start making the list now because you're not going to be done typing names of works of fiction (poetry included!) in the next hour, week, or month.
Another thing to mention is that Babylon 5 is presented a little differently than Lord of the Rings is. And according to most communications/psychology/sociology theorists (ie. McLuhan or Innis) the medium is very important to the content. B5 is a episodic TV show over 5 seasons. Lord of the Rings is a 3 book trilogy or a set of 3 hour (roughly) movies shown in a movie theater. That has profound consequences on the story as well.

Don't worry, there's still plenty to learn about Gandalf - even if you've had that one surprise spoiled.
Mind you, it's dead sad when Sam dies, saving Frodo from being cut to pieces by Sauron!
...............DOH!
Oh all right, I'm kidding (sorry, couldn't resist!)
By the way, don't forget the Rangers. They started out in Lord of the Rings as a secret race that watched for the coming of the shadow of the enemy - funny that they phrased it that way too. And Aragorn also wears a green stone to represent his true identity - Elessar, the Elf-stone. - representing a watchful alliance between the races of men and elves.
How strange that the Rangers in B5 also represent an alliance of two races watching for the return of the shadows.
I'm impressed that JMS took these elements but managed to weave them into an original story that doesn't just look like a plageurised version of Tolkien's book. But then, that's the value of a good story for you.

This thread is about as bad as those stupid "Enterprise vs Omega-class Destroyer" or whatever threads.

Well if you don't like the thread, don't read it. The Star Trek v B5 ships thread was certainly a daft one and I posted about it at the time but I took on board the fact that people had a right to post and - to many people - it brought pleasure to discuss a subject.
At least this is B5 related. As I recall no-one moaned when Edwin posted to say he'd been grounded and that thread went on for weeks.

Of course you are entitled to your opinion, Alphakiller, as is everyone. I was simply expressing mine.

it is obvious that JMS took inspiration from LOTR - we can take that as read, I think..
Kinda suspicious though, when LOTR came out, all the adverts on Sci-Fi started for LOTR...

Suspiscious? They just had a similar release date.
Also, in my opinion JMS pulled off a major coup to get Legend of the Rangers trailers playing before US screenings of Lord of the Rings in cinemas.

ah star trek vs b5 haha (dry the tear from laughing) (can) [ or more importnatly] (should) i start a b5 vs star wars vs star trek vs freespace (1 and 2) topic thing simply to amuse my self as trekies and whoevers type posts to support their side. and in the end find that they all end up living in perfect harmony because they respect one another after finding out that neither side could win with words. maybe that should be a mod project:
The B5 vs Star Trek vs Star Wars vs Freespace Mod
hehe i have no clue what im talking about and that could explain why you should laugh at me, im new!
