X box

1) So if this Xbox is going to be the next toy I am going to buy, Will Freespace2 and Red Faction Be releced on it.

2) Is freespace, Half-life and all my other Faverate Pc Games already compatable, this is what ime geting confused on.(X box based on PC)

3) Is the X box just a PC in a box. I.e. a dos based operating system that slows down all your games.

4) Can you change the sound cards and graphics cards like you can to upgrade your PC.

5) Will I be able to down load Mods and Patches.

6) Will I be able to Make Mods on my pc for the Xbox.

Fozzy.

I don't care about the Xbox. Microsoft is buying all the good developers. Ex. Bungie was going to release Halo on PC and Xbox, and maybe even on PS2...THEN MICROSOFT BOUGHT THEM! I swear, if they buy SquareSoft, I will DESTROY BILL GATES!

I will kill him myself if he Volution Or THQ.

1) FS2, not gonna happen. RF, perhaps.
2) Xbox and PC games are not compatible; merely easy to port from one to the other.
3) No
4) No; well, okay, no. You can upgrade like sticking stuff in an expansion slot, but no.
5) Not yet, and probably no.
6) See #5

Xbox is NOT a PC in a box. It is a console, with all the advantages and disadvantages of such. Compare it to a killer-spec PlayStation 2 (but with uber-llamalicious titles so far. Halo with framerate problems? Screw that.) and you're getting close. (E.g. expansion slot, internet capacity)

Surely just killing Bill Gates is a good idea, irrespective of anything he might yet do. Honestly, the guy deserves nothing. less

Posted by Alphakiller on 05-18-2001 10:13 PM:

Jealous since he's more successful than you'll ever be, Slick?
Get over it...the fact is, he's damn good at business, and I respect that.

Posted by valen on 05-19-2001 01:01 AM:

Actually, i read that with some games you can get patches and stuff. Back in the EGM issue with the x-box on the cover, they had a large article about it. It talked about how it is designed so you can download patches, levels, upgrades, etc. for games...and how for some games you could rip your own music and put on the game. All sorts of innovations using the system and the internet

First off...
Welcome to the VWBB Slick and valen!

Second...
Bill Gates does deserve to die, but murdering someone is always bad.

Posted by Fozzy on 05-19-2001 03:21 PM:

Ok ime going to search for a website on the x-box specs and what it cant and can do.

if we all do it we might get someware fast.

Posted by Jabu on 05-19-2001 06:20 PM:

How does Bill Gates deserve to die? He's a businessman, and he's always acted like one.

If you're mad at him for Win 95, how much of that you think he HIMSELF coded?

He's not even the boss of Microsoft anymore. Sort of...

Fozzy, the X-Box can do pretty much everything that the competitors can do. Except supposedly faster (the PIII 733 + nVidia graphics hardware is pretty fast I'd say).

The real question comes down to price and games.

Xbox suck pc win i don't like Bill gates that man suck

pc will win because pc has good games
iwar2 max payne RF fs2 freelancer.etc

Yay for punctuation!

I don't think X-Box has been in the public eye long enough to judge if the games for it are going to be good. Even PS2 had a lack of seemingly "good looking" games until later.

We'll see what happens. I'm not going to totally discount X-Box, but im not sure if I'm going to consider any of the new console systems or not.

Although I am against Microsoft in principal and will make sure my next computer is a G4 with Mac OS X, I will probably buy the X-Box if I can get the cash. From what I have seen, the available games have GeForce 3 level graphics and it may even be worth it just to strip in down and get the Hard-drive, chips etc. I heard it has a BroadBand modem inbuilt.

The good thing is, if the X-Box fails, Microsoft will most likely die. Windows XP was designed to trap people as it can only run Microsoft programs such as Office and won't run Corel and such likes. It is alos designed in such a way that the interface, if learned without any prior computer knowledge, will make it extremely difficult for you to grasp other OS's due to the massive differences. Microsoft is losing its war against the Unix internet and Windows XP was its last ditch effort at a viable OS which people would be stuck with once they got it. People caught on pretty quick though and XP has met widespread criticism and most people have said they won't use it. So if the X-Box goes down, Microsofts hardware prospects for at least the next 2 year are screwed. And due to the way the company is run and wages are payed, a levelling of the stock prices could be enough to take them down to half the level of Mac.

If Microsoft do go down then Linux and Unix will forever be the Internet kings and Mac will rule the desktop. Only problem is that Bill Gates owns like 40% of Apple. If Apple went down after Microsoft and reformed without Bill or his software claims, the internet, neigh, the world would be a better place.

In short: X-Box fails=Microsoft die.

(Don't you think I'd make a good reporter?)

By hardware I meant anything but games (and IE.)

Posted by IceFire on 05-28-2001 04:30 AM:

I might live in a bubble (I've said that twice today already) but I don't think Microsoft would get away with deliberatly blocking other peoples software from operating on their system. Especially when its the competition.

Having something preinstalled is one thing, but intentionally blocking?

I have hopes that XP is going to be a real operating system...it is afterall, built on the NT/2000 kernel which should equal improved stability.

The things I don't like the sounds of XP are the hardware profiling: I don't want MS to know what my computer is down to the nuts and bolts. They should be happy that I bought their software. Period.

I have hopes for Microsoft, regardless of if we like it or not, but they did bring a large amount of uniformity to the computers (remeber before DirectX - the days of configuring sound drivers until you got the right settings, and no two games were alike either).

Posted by Scythe on 05-28-2001 04:47 AM:

True, Ice, but it's proprietary uniformity. To game makers, it says: "Use DirectX or your game will take longer to produce and it will suck!" To those trying to use those games on oter OSs, or to port them to those OSs, it says: "ha, this game uses DirectX, you can't port it!" You still can, but it's lots harder than it needs to be, from what I hear.

Posted by Fattony on 05-28-2001 05:48 AM:

XP and Microsoft suck. There was an article detailing all the faults and spying and **** thats built into XP in Computer Shopper a month of two back.

And although it doesn't "intentionally" block other programs such as WordPerfect and the likes, the OS uses some sort of driver or file recognition or some **** so that anything which isn't written with specific key markers is almost impossible to run. Like saying "Hey everyone's welcome in this toybox" but putting a circular door so the square blocks don't fit. Its more of a passive thing. So people start making programs which work on XP but because of the changes they don't work on other OS's, and because of limited money they can only choose maybe one platform for their program and so they choose microsoft because <sarcasm>Microsoft is the best and if it wont run on Windows, it aint worth having.</sarcasm> Then once everything is in their code and they have a monopoly, the government moves in to shut the monopoly down, but whadda y know, the programs that everyone knows how to use, only work on XP and so they either have to leave MS alone or completely overhaul most of the computers on the Earth.

Linux Has Corel Draw 8 for free, neto apart from the fact that most of my faverate programs wont run on it
