Although WCP was lacking in a good storyline, the actual atmosphere was quite quite good. It was very spooky. That stemmed from everything from the ship designs to the actions and events. That was definately cool.
I thought FS2 had a great atmosphere as well, except that it changed as the story went along.

Atmosphere
I just played my favorite Space Combat Sim
Wing Commander 5
and as usual I got seduced by its fantastic atmosphere !
Hope we can get at least half as much atmosphere in our mod.
I feel , I have to play it through again .
Freespace 2 is no match to WC5 , although the grafics were much better.
I think I have to improve the EA campaign story script even more... Oh man ! To get the speech for it will be quite a project ! There will be lots of communication.
But that's for later....
And I wanna come to the point of CutSzenes and the intro.
I understand Volition has agreed to encode them for us. This means the Babylon Project will have its own intro and its own cutszenes.
I say this again : We will have our own cutscenes ! ( at least I believe this )
The next step in the animations-hierachy are Briefing Animations. Kazan is the one who plays with Truespace to make some nice anis . White can encode the ani-files ( I could do that also ) and I could use my PSP tasks to make some nice animations with the GALACTIC CHART done by FuzzyModem a while ago...
I think if we work together we could have nice animated briefing anis for each mission.
These are just thoughts to remind me our mod will be MORE than it currently is ...
Some of the team are getting depressive.
So , lets get the dmaned things to motion !

I liked Wing Commander Prophecy too... maybe because it's idea was based on Babylon 5. "An ancient enemy" thingy. Basically I played through WC 3-4 because it had Luke Bl... no. Christopher Skywa... Arrgh. Chris Blair on it (Mark Hamill ) but then I saw that in every WC (1-5) had that certain feeling like desperation and stuff like that.
And like IceFire said. WCP was definately the spookiest. It's a damn shame that WCP will not get any sequels. I'd like know what happened to Mr.Gari... Christopher Blair at the end...
Capturing the atmosphere (like it was in Wing Commader) is very difficult... you have to be able to make characters unforgottable, you have to like 'em, they must make the player sad, angry or get them laugh (depending on the event). Then it would be close to WC. I liked Tom Wilson as Maniac. Malcolm McDowell as Admiral Tolwyn sometimes made me angry (in WC4 mainly) and funerals in Wing Commander usually made me feel sadness...
If this is your goal Skullar. Then you will have a one helluva job... good luck.

Hmm. yes .
A helluva job.
I need all help I can get.
The problems :
-------------------
- We don't have actors . And even if Weffrey Wilbert would volunteer to play Kosh again I'd say no.
- We need accurate voices for the characters. Well, some could be captured from the show , but then we can't have another voice for the character for the passgages not seen in the show.
- We can't make cutscenes with actors on our own. Our budget is quite low , you know.
Problems we don't have :
-------------------------
- We can capture scenes from show . Video as well as audio
- We can have as many new and unknown characters as we wanna have. WE will make the speech for them. We can have them INGAME.
- We can make rendering animations and other ones for the Briefing Anis .
To sum up : We will have no probs whereever we don't have to rely on the show-characters. Hmmm. Let's see what we can do.
Just a question : Do you know anyone who sounds just like General Hague or Cpt.MacDougan ?
The Problems we dont have

I have all wing commanders since wing commander2:vengeance of the kilrathi
The best one in my opinion was The 4th The price of freedom. This series of games are classics because they represented milestones to the gaming industry. The 1st was made when it was rare to see even a sim on those pre-historic 286's the 3rd:The hart of the tiger was the first one to have real live characters on movies. Its impossible to make an atmosphere like that because:
1-the FS2 characters are computer generated
and familiar to a large nuber of sim fans
2-Freespace episodes are only 2 and made within 3 years of separation while wing commander started in 1991 and ended in 1998
7 years thats an eternity in the PC market.
3-The fs2 story line is not as original humans VS advanced aliens... too common
too similar to the other sims like the pioneer wing commander, this last one even covers a civil war hehehe the borderworlds take no prisioners!!
I didnt enjoyed the WCP much,it is wing commander 1 over again and an excuse for a repetitive trilogy system.
to me the wing commander saga died with the 4th the price of freedom, actualy my favourite.
it is probable that well never see a game like it because all editors have changed their filosophy, in stead of grang mega-productions now they make cheap games that are sold more easely in their poits of view like First person shooters and RPG's with story of wiches and farys bunnys sorcerers magic and other sissy stuff,BAAAAAH

Prophecy had great visual design and premise.
However, the fact that the plot was gutted, simply killed most of the potential. (the conflicts with finding out what they are fighting, having to ally with the paranoid Kilrathi, dealing with other races raped by the Kilrathi while trying to discover the invaders, etc.)
Personally, Wing Commander III for me was excellent, it had good visual design for the time as well as pacing.
FreeSpace though, I believe blows everything in the market out of the water. It might not be the most original, but it's well paced and has a good feel, not as dark as it could and should be, but it is distinct.

And its a damn shame that FreeSpace 2 isn't getting a sequel.
Everything good seems to slip away before being noticed. How crappy is that?

The sci-fi gaming genre as a whole hasn't done well due to publishers and many developers not seeing the potential within it.
B5:ITF as well as I-War2 and Freelancer will all be good games in their own right, but they won't be Half-Lifes or even RedFactions...
