Wouldn't it be cool...

Wouldn't it be neat if the next generation of space sims incorporated Volitiond Geo-Mod engine? Think of it, you could see cap ships literaly getting sliced apart. If a beam went through a ship, you could fly throught the hole!
Even if there's no FS3, they should come up with another space-sime, just so they could do that.

Umm Ashrak... shut up! Volition can't make an FS3 cuz they don't have the rights to the FS universe... Interplay does(Titus now I guess) They can't make an S3 cuz they would get in a lot of trouble....not sure what would happen specificaly but it would not be a good thing for volition

It's called "copyright infrigement" followed by "massive lawsuit" ... corporations don't screw with that kind of thing, else they're toast.

So Ashrak ... express your anger in a slightly more mature way next time.

MABY THE REASON FOR them not selling so well is because the big corporates chokes the spacesim genre for FPS shooters for the simple reason they can make alot more money since it requires no skill to make a fps where making a spacesim takes far greater work

By the time the development of the game finished the market could be better. Probably be a revolutionary game too.

I hate to say it but I think that the market is crying out for a decent space combat game set in the B5 universe. All of the other major SciFi programs have space combat sims except B5. Also, the genre is crying out for an overhaul in technology and campaign setup, in the same way that FPSs were before Half-Life.

I can sum up in three words what we need:

Into the Fire

Ahem. Wrong.
"The market" doesn't want a space-sim game. Look at the sales for FS2 - it was (and is) the best space-sim since TIE Fighter, in my opinion, and look at the sales for Red Faction, to compare a pair of Volition products.

Refresher: RF PS2 sold sixty thousand copies in, what, four days? Yeah. Tell me, did FS2 did that? I wish. And, okay, comparing the two is comparing apples and oranges, but for sheer subjective feel, which one did I like better? FS2 for sure.

A game's 'revolutionary' status means jack. I mean, if someone designed a brand new revolutionary chess game, would it sell like Return to Castle Wolfenstein? I doubt it.

I mean, yeah, I want Into the Fire too, but unfortunately, it's business sense. High production costs (because ITF looked to be a really good setup, and good = time = money) and low returns (because no space-sim has sold really well in quite some time) doesn't look so good to an exec.

Remember - much as companies might want to produce "good games" if they don't produce profitable ones, they're in Chapter 11.

Name a space sim that did do well? Descent: FreeSpace got fairly good treatment and sold okay. A RTS game with similar treatment got huge truckloads more sold.

Why? Simulations are more niche market and while most space "sims" are more like action games, most space action games are more like rail shooters.

I'll be interested to know how I-WAR2 does...and as far as I know, there are no space sims on drawing boards at all right now.

FreeLancer is totally different than a space-sim. Its a new spin on an old idea and I think it'll do well, but its not the same as WC, TIE Fighter, or FreeSpace.

Not quite, no. "Some idiot" never said they were - sales (or lack thereof) said they weren't selling. Now, FS2 didn't get advertised worth jack and I know you think (and I agree) that's a real shame (and stupid on Interplay's part) but the fact is, FS2 had amazing word-of-mouth and still didn't sell.

Space-sims are niche markets, they don't have the mass-market appeal that so many companies need nowadays, because budgets for games go up (for prettier graphics and code work etc etc ... see below), so they can take less chances on them...the "rebel game" which has a few graphical bugs but 100% better plot will get reamed by certain graphics-whore websites and magazines whom the 'general public' (which is, remember, where all the profit is) listen to. :sigh:

Basically, unless a game is a sure seller, companies are going to be very leery about selling it. And space-sims are not sure sellers these days, sad to say.

I have some awesome ideas.

Let's take an amazing 3d realtime strat game like homeworld, and completely integrate it with a really cool space sim game. Kind of like they did with battlezone, but put together a little better.

Then, you make it either integrated, or independant, so that someone can have the single most amazing spaceflight sim ever made, if they don't like strategy, or a groundbreaking, utterly awesome strat game, if they don't want spaceflight.

The idea, however, is for the absolute penultimate joint experience. We now have Rainbow 6 in space.

Maybe even have marine operations aboard enemy capships, thus throwing in a First- (Or third- if you prefer) person shooter, also with squad based tactics that you can either plan, fight, or both.

Then, you allow for multiplayer, where each team has an 'admiral', and several pilots, gunners, marines, and so forth.

Oh, yeah. And we crucify the marketing department if they wanna carge us $5 a month to play online.

Yeah, I know no game company will ever devote the time and money, but it's a nice dream, at least.

A space sim that's selling well? Two Words:
Jump Gate

Now granted I don't go for the massive multi-player games that require a massive time commitment, but JG does prove that the genre is still alive. Developers just have to do something new with it.

BTW
I'm surprised that my first thread got this many responses the day it was posted. You guys RULE!

ShadowBoy - that was really funny. Good stuff.

By the way, are you going to ship me a 4-processor Athlon XP 9900+ setup with 800GB of LMNOPRAM to run that sucker?

Sounds just like the old arguament of "they ought to combine Championship Manager and Fifa so you can manage the team and have the graphics and games to watch". Simple answer, it's not going to happen in any game genre so why should it happen in space combat sims?

And friend and me , we once combined X-Wing Alliance multiplayer skirmish mode with a strategy game ( on a table in my room , not on PC )
We moved , built fleets , and so on , and the battles were fought out on the PC.

Look, If I were to be on the development team for Freespace 3 this what I would MAKE happen.

1: New Geo Mod tech so the ships could get blown apart
2: Better FMV sequences
3: Ground missions where you are a marine on a planet with tanks and other vehicles
4: Marine missions where you have to board a ship ( Like I wished you could do in FS 1, when I saw the boarding party FMV)
5: Ground assault missions in fighters and bombers
6: Real planet backdrops, with the ability to enter planet atmosphere if in close proximatey.
7: Bigger and badder Shivan ships on the scale of B5's (eg Vorlon PK)
