Thumbs down "clusterboom.wav" Dear GOD not this sound effect again...

First off, FRIGGIN FANTASTIC job with TBP so far. I've been watching you guys forever, and this release was well worth the wait. Everything is top-notch, but I have just one nagging problem (well, two if you count the Nial's guns, but I read FAQs).

The sound effect used in the file "clusterboom.wav" annoys me to no end. I first heard it in the final level for DOOM II, and since then have heard it used many times in film, tv, and games. I don't even know what it's supposed to be, since it doesn't sound like any explosion, flash, or ignition that I've ever heard. Yes, I know I can change it easily on my comp, but since your sound man did such a fine job with everything else, it makes me want to cry when I hear that whore of a sound effect.

So please, for the love of me find something more unique. Please?

~Ash

Can you describe the sound? Is it a Kwaffooooonsh!" or more of a "Brwfafafafafaaaa!" or maybe its a "Geeeeeeeerekraphttttttt!"

You are right with this Doom 2 thing
I heard this sound also there , and in STAR TREK 8 when one of the borgs turns his head.

That sound rules! Yes, it's used in movies and so are some other sound effects from Doom.

Yeah, it is a little nitpicky, but this sound bugs the hell out of me EVERY time I hear it. It just screams "I AM A STOCK SOUND EFFECT. EVERY OTHER SOUND IN THIS TV SHOW/MOVIE/GAME IS EFFECTIVELY NULL BECAUSE THIS SOUND WAS USED."

This is definitely the case here, because here I am, flying around during mission 1, astounded at the Starfury pulse cannons, the "whoosh" of a Nial flying by, the sound (and sight) of a Sharlin jumping in and tearing a Hyperion apart and then.....this. It was like eating the finest meal then getting served sh*t for dessert: it doesn't matter how good everything before it tasted since I leave the table with the taste of sh*t.

You know, that last comment hit me so strangely in the paradoxes department that I don't think I'll challenge it for fear of becoming permanently confused

What, I get it. C'mon. Must be Canadians are less vulgar than us Americans or something

Basically he's saying everything else is awesome, but his last impression is a bad one, so all the good stuff kind of disappears because he gets fixated on the bad sound effect.

It's psych - it actually makes sense, but the explanation's kind of long - so he's not weird or anything.

I don't particularly think the sound sucks but whenever I hear it it reminds me of Doom and that in itself just feels strange. Here's another one, why do several films also feel the need to use the Doom 'door opening' sound?

Oh I get that part. The whole point that such a microscopic thing has such a massive impact on a single person is rather disturbing to me

Its a paradox because if you did the math on good to bad, things wouldn't add up

Ah, but when too much is good, you take it for granted......so you either have one niggly thing in a great, um, bit, or a massively crappy main bit and one excellent bit that everyone becomes fixated on.

Change the sound? ..mmh...I really like the sound, but I see what I can do...but definately NOT in the next few weeks...too busy with other sound things...

BTW, I have also heard this sound in "The Rock" (with the napalm thing in the sewers) and in "Magic Carpet" when you activated the boost spell

What really weirded me out was some Windows 98 sound scheme which had menu up/menu down noises straight out of X-COM: UFO Defense.

It was really, REALLY strange to use that computer, I'll tell you that.
And since it wasn't mine, I couldn't delete the sounds or stop them or whatever ... sigh. (And yeah, I just turned the speakers off after a while. He had it hooked up to his massive amp/stereo rig so finding the on/off switch was ... amusing.)

Black Sheep 2k:

I know, it's up to you. I also know that I can change it myself...and that's just one sound; I replaced over half of the sound effects in Day of Defeat with ones from Saving Private Ryan. That was hours upon hours of work, so changing just one isn't a biggie.

Alphakiller:

I have a similar setup on my machine, but with the "start navigation" and "complete navigation" instead. Jedi Knight used one X-COM sound and StarCraft used another, so I didn't have to use the low-quality originals. It's quite nifty, IMO.
